Gomantak Times 3rd November 2004 ______________________________________________________________________ Florida Goans Vote In US Elections Our Staff Reporter PANAJI: Even as the US went to vote yesterday, Goan families in American state of Florida have refrained from taking a united stand in favour of either George Bush or John Kerry. When contacted by GT, Ivy D’Costa of the Florida Goa Association (FGA) said that there were about 80 families registered as members but maintained that the association was not a political group and did not subscribe to any particular agenda. “Everyone is on their own,” she said. D’Costa said that the Goan community was not rooting for any particular consensus candidate and also added that, as a group, they had not discussed any issues that have dogged the 2004 Elections such as gay rights and abortion. She also added that there was no united view on George Bush’s term in the White House, saying, “Everyone has a different point of view.” Replying to a question on members of the community voting in large numbers, she said, “I expect all who can, will vote. I have done so last time and plan to this year too.” Incidentally it was the state of Florida that decided the last American elections in favour of Bush. A controversial decision by the Florida High Court was responsible for Bush’s election to the White House.
