I chose to restrict my response to one aspect of your original post since I am no expert air travel. However I agree that Indian flight prices seem to be high particularly taking into account other modes of transport and average earnings. Also, the Indian Govt. has this week announced a surcharge of Rs. 500 per passenger in order to fund new greenfield airports like Mopa. Fuel costs were covered by the Rediff article but surely labour costs plays a more significant role.
When I skimmed through some Press reports on the subject, I came across some references to actual prices but did not include them because they was dated and also there was no guarantee of comparing like to like. I let one reference in - Bangalore to Goa since that was one of the sectors you had mentioned. If you want current prices you will have to call the airlines or look at their websites: http://indian-airlines.nic.in/ http://www.jetairways.com/ http://www.airsahara.net/ http://www.airdeccan.net/
However that is no easy task. Air Deccan lists Goa - Mumbai for Rs. 700 but try getting a ticket for that price! You will probably have to pay three times that amount. Air Sahara has a variety of special fares: Square Drive, Super Four, Sixer, Super Sixer, Point-to-Point, Hopping Fares, Special fares, Steal a Seat, Flexi Auctions, Holiday Packages, USD Fares, Special International Fares etc.
