(H) BODY FOUND: The body of a 50-year-old man, Peter D'Souza of Tamil Nadu, was found at a bus shelter at Cortalim on November 10. D'Souza was working for a fishing trawler at Cortalim for the last few years. (GT) POLLUTED LAKE IN NAVELIM: Fearing the water pollution touching higher levels in Xalpem-Tollem in Navelim village, the Navelim MLA, Mr Luizinho Faleiro, urged the chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board to initiate necessary action at the earliest to avoid health hazards. (NT) LEOPARD SKIN JACKET SEIZED: Goa Police's Crime Branch personnel raided a leather shop in Bardez's Coastal belt and seized a jacket made of leopard's skin, on Tuesday. The owner of the leather shop, one Mohamad Altaf Handroo, has been booked under section 49-B and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act. (H) THEFT AT AGASSAIM CHAPEL: Some unknown culprits effected entry in a chapel at Dexibhat, Agassaim, and decamped with articles worth Rs.9,000. (NT) NEW SARPANCH FOR CURTORIM: Nazareth Rodrigues became the new sarpanch of the 11-member village Panchayat of Curtorim on November 10, defeating Armando Estibeiro by 6-5 votes. (H) PRE-PORTUGUESE ARSENAL AT OLD GOA: Sites behind Sao Pedro Church, the Arsenal de Marinha, plots of Department of Agriculture at Ela and behind Pinto garage are being cleared for space to park more than 7,000 cars and 15,000 two-wheelers as well as buses. The site of the Arsenal of the Navy (identified as Bakhia's property) is considered archaeologically more sensitive as it was virtually a fortress and a mini city with many edifices inside.According to Percival Noronha, secretary of Indian Heritage Society, the Ribeira das Naus, as it was also called, was developed by the Muslim rulers and existed before the Portuguese rulers took over, a fact acknowledged in various chronicles. The exhibition displays thematically arranged stamps on Christian themes from all over the world from the Pilar Collection. Two panels are dedicated to Francis Xavier and the Exposition of his relics. An interesting specimen is the stamp of the signature of Francis Xavier. (H) DOCUMENTARIES ON KONKANI WRITERS: Documentaries on the life and works of five veteran Konkani writers in the series titled Sahitya Shilpkar, written by Jyoti Kunkoliekar, will be released in December. The five writers are Ravindra Kelekar, Manoharrai Sardesai, Chandrakant Keni, Damodar Mauzo and Pundalik Naik. Each documentary which is nearly of one-hour duration will highlight their life and literary contribution through interviews, life sketch, remarks by critics, etc. (H) ABDONIO'S "ALVORADA" TO BE RELEASED: "Alvorada", an album by veteran drummer Abdonio Rodrigues of Sanvordem, will be released on November 11 by world renowned percussionist, Bondo, at Chef Fernando's Nostalgia at Raia. "Alvorada" is to be treasured as a collector's rarity and is a selection of the last generation of genuine musicians of Goa. (NT) ART EXHIBITION AT OLD GOA: An art exhibition "Bridging the gaps through the Gospel" will be held at Old Goa during the Exposition of the sacred remains of St Francis Xavier. The exhibition has been conceived and curated by Rudolf Ludwig Kammermeier. (NT) BOOK OF ALFRED ROSE: All fans of the late king of melody, Alfred Rose, should definitely buy the book entitled "Alfred Rose - Konkani Bhaxeche Maha Kolakar", written by Franklin D'Souza, from Shiroda, an engineer by profession. A labour of love, the publication is a showcase of the late singer's talent, achievements and awards. The book is divided into sections. A compact book, this can also serve as a reference for most of the data that may be required on the late singer. (NT) "MUSICIANS DON'T DIE, THEY SIMPLY FADE AWAY": There are few musicians in Goa as experienced as 58-year-old Tony Noronha, the piano man who has enthralled audiences across demographic and geographical borders. Born in Mumbai, Anthony Joseph Noronha is the son of a choirmaster. But it was his godfather Augusto Mascarenhas - the bass player from the popular Mumbai band of yesteryears, Chic Chocolate - who really inspired him to try his hand at music when he was just 10 years old.When asked about whether he (Tony) would ever retire, he signs off saying, "Musicians never retire, they simply fade away."
