State to bear painting cost of Saligao Church

It seems to me a shame that parishioners and
ex-parishioners cannot bear the cost of getting the
church painted! What is the use of all the Saligao
socials being held???

There are wider issues here -- should a 'secular' state spend money on places of worship? Even if the excuse often given is that of 'promoting tourism'? Should parishioners accept such offers knowing that there's no such thing as a free meal? What is the State's intention, specially when the constituency is represented by a single-seat party which has played a crucial if vacilating role when it came to supporting/opposing the BJP-led coalition government?

If the Congress had to do the same, the BJP would probably have angrily protested and called it 'minoritism'. Actually, these are mere tokens which don't make a real difference to the lives of the people of the state, but just continue in keeping them divided. FN
