Dear GoaNetters, One correction: the PLANT UTSAV has been postponed to 02-05 December,2004 because the "Jaanta Raja" presentation [20 to25 Nov. ] is likely to be extended in Mapusa in the adjoining field. If you have missed a copy of the FIND-ALL GOA pocket brochure, make sure you get a copy of the PLUS tabloids from DIAMOND PUBLICATIONS in the first week of December. It lists the events all over Goa upto 10 January,2005, in a common edition specially for the Festive season. We will revert to local editions in January,2005, for NORTH GOA, BICHOLIM, PONDA, MARGAO, VASCO........and possibly some more. We grow to serve you better. It is the advertising support that makes it possible.Like it or lump it; the advertiser needs to be compensated for it. It has been our effort to make even 'advertorial' support interesting to the reader. The growing readership and advertising is proof of that. It is no joke to grow from just 5000 copies of one black and white tabloid[MARGAO PLUS] on newsprint in Sept.2003 to 28,000 copies a month of 5 TABLOIDS in colour on art paper.....in just one year. It speaks of the support you give us to a sincere effort to serve you and keep you informed. It is a model that Findoll and other agencies also follow with varying degree of success. It is not as if the so-called "mainstream" newspapers have not copied this model of 'advertorials'. Quite a bit of what you think is "news" content in the newspapers is really advertising incognito that is paid for by corporates, advertising agencies, PR firms and even individuals. ............................................................................ .......... > From: GoanetReader <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND WHAT'S HAPPENING IN GOA CAN BE QUITE A TASK By Frederick Noronha . Events get written about at the eleventh hour, or not at all. Newspapers don't always carry advance press notes on time Resultantly, you miss attending functions you would have otherwise liked to been to. Event-organisers themselves often blame the poor participation on > the poor awareness. But Findall's [www.findall-goa.com] just-launched and quaintly-named > FindAll-Goa monthly update could indeed help things. Let's see how things > shape up over time... > FindAll-Goa calls itself "the leading events navigator". It obviously isn't quite there FindAll-Goa obviously can dowith its improvements. For now, it seems heavily skewed towards North Goa. Secondly, and more importantly, this is yet another publication that has its > model overwhelmingly dependent on advertising revenues. Nothing wrong in > that, per se. But we already seem to have too many of these in Goa these > days. *So, generating reader-oriented quality information is no priority; > earning advertiser rupees is the focus.* > > Just the other day, a friend in the trade was mentioning how difficult it > has become to earn advertising revenue. He claimed that some of the early > players had "ruined the market". That apart, Goa's readers could benefit > from business models that rely on selling credible news and content, to > readers with whom their primarily loyalty lies. *But then, not everyone can > be a 'Lonely Planet', which can sell it credibility-packed guide for 25 > Australian dollars or more each.* ............................................................ It would be nice to follow the LONELY PLANET model. It is a book we recommend[in our soon to be released Travel tabloid] that the tourists to read. Credibility of the LONELY PLANET comes at a price[ Rs.1000/- plus for a new edition; nothing less than Rs300/- for a dog-eared copy at Fort-Mumbai or Janpath-Delhi] that few people in Goa or India are willing to cough up. How does one finance a publication? Government grants or public donations? If a local publisher was to print what the LONELY PLANET has to say about Goa Police and the Goa Tourism Dept., it would not even get to sell the copies. Even the DGP Amod Kanth,IPS, knows that such uprightness comes at a heavy price. DGPs and Publishers are not elected. At least, publishers have readership, sales, circulation or the annual balance sheet as benchmarks of their popularity. What benchmark does the DGP have: arrests? Even convictions are out of his control. ;-( Viva Goa. Miguel
