GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS Nov 22, 2004 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Khorim utram sobit nhoi, ani sobit utram khorim nhoi." (True words are not beautiful, and beautiful words are not true.) "domnic fernandes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 'AMCHO NOMAN TUKA GOENCHEA SAIBA': On Sunday, the world was Old Goa, the destination was Old Goa and the thoughts for thousands of Goans across the globe was Old Goa. And at the venue it was a seething mass of young, old and the infirm all come to pay their respects and show their adoration to Goencho Saib.Everywhere there was a sense of anticipation and awe as the coffin wound its way slowly from the Basilica to the Se Cathedral. (Andrew Pereira in Herald) "EXPOSITION" PHOTO FEATURE: We have a small photo feature on the Exposition of the Sacred Remains of St Francis Xavier which opened at Old Goa on November 21. Please Check at http://goacom.com/goanow/exposition/Exposition2004.htm SIXTEENTH EXPOSITION BEGINS: Thousands of pilgrims, dignitaries and others, cutting across religious lines, kissed the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier venerated as Goencho Saib after the 16th Exposition commenced on Sunday (November 21), following a nearly three-hour ceremony and procession at Old Goa. (GT) EXPOSITION BEGINS: Prayers for unity and harmony marked the pontifical Mass celebrated by the Archbishop patriarch Reverend Filipe Neri Ferrao on November 21 morning at Old Goa, to inaugurate the 43-day 16th Solemn Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier. (NT) PILGRIMS TAKE A BOW: Joining the Archbishop in the pontifical mass were Archbishop Emeritus Raul Gonsalves, Rector of Bom Jesus Basilica Fr Savio Barreto, Convenor of the Exposition Committee, Fr George Aguiar and the Vicar General of the Archdiocese Fr Jose Remedios. The congregation included Governor SC Jamir and his wife, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, former chief minister Wilfred de Souza, MP Churchill Alemao and others. In his 23-minute homily delivered in Konkani and English, the Archbishop-Patriarch Felipe Neri Ferrao said, "We are all pilgrims and we believe that God sent his only begotten son in this world as a pilgrim." The archbishop said that St Francis Xavier followed in the footsteps of Jesus. He gave up riches and lived a simple life, by serving the sick. (H) LOW TURNOUT FOR EXPOSITION: The 16th Exposition got off to a rather sedate start as the inaugural ceremony did not turn out to be the 'feast' that was to bring in huge hordes of the faithful. Only an estimated 10,000 devotees attended the pontifical mass. As it was a Sunday, many probably thought of undertaking the pilgrimage to Old Goa at a subsequent date, fearing massive crowds on the first day.The alternate road to Old Goa via Chimbel and Kadamba plateau was completed in record time but dust storms kicked up by the bigger vehicles made the transit for two-wheeler riders a suffocating experience. The much-talked about navigational route to Old Goa failed to enthuse pilgrims on the first day. The lone trip from the Santa Monica jetty from Panaji had only a single passenger on board - a GT staffer. (GT) FERVOUR-CHARGED ATMOSPHERE: Once in a decade, a day dawns on Goa that sweeps Goans in its wake. Young and old, able and infirm, Goans of all walks of life and indeed all creed flock to venerate the sacred relics of Goa's beloved saint, Francis Xavier, during the Exposition. (NT) DANCE-DRAMA: On the occasion of the Exposition, the Society of Pilar will present "Francis: A Man in a Hurry", a dance-drama, at the Pastoral Institute, Old Goa, starting from November 22 to 28. The show will be presented in English and Hindi and is intended to help pilgrims reflect on the life of St Francis Xavier. (NT) FERRY SERVICE TO OLD GOA: To facilitate the pilgrims to attend the Exposition, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd, will operate Waterways Transport from 22 to 30 November, 2004. The timings of departure from Panaji jetty to Old Goa is 5 am to 6 am, 7 am, 8 am, 9 am, 2 pm and 3 pm. From Old Goa to Panaji it is at 7 am to 8 am, 10 am, 12 (noon), 2 pm and 4 pm. Ticket Rs.15 oneway. Contact 2438754/2437496. CORPORATE SPONSORS FOR IFFI: The Entertainment Society of Goa has succeeded in roping in several high profile corporate sponsors to help defray the costs of the International Film Festival of India. Addressing the media yesterday ESG CEO Sanjit Rodrigues said that his organisation has tied up with IDEA Cellular for communications facilities, Victor Apollo Hospital would be the event's medical partner, State Bank of India will be the official banker and Pepsi will be the major soft drink, among others. (GT) NOT AT IFFI: The Hollywood flicks - "Mission Impossible", "Gladiator" and "ET" - that event producers 360 Degrees are planning to screen at Miramar leave much to be desired. We agree that they are all great movies but all three movies are regular on cable TV.If somebody had done a little research they would have found three English movies that are not seen on television and also have a strong link to Goa. "Sea Wolves", the legendary war movie is almost entirely set in Goa; "Bangkok Hilton" has Nichole Kidman on a Goan beach; and the more recent "Bourne Supremacy" has some fantastic visuals of Goa. (GT) STUDENTS OF FILM INSTITUTES UPBEAT: Students of three film and television institutions from Pune, Kolkota and Cochin have shown interest in participating in the 35th International Film Festival of India, beginning in the city from November 29. (NT) WORK OR QUIT, ALVA TELLS PARTYMEN: All India Congress Committee General Secretary in-charge of Goa desk, Margaret Alva, on November 20, gave a clear message to party MLAs that those who are half-hearted about their responsibilities are free to leave the organisation. She also hinted about the change of guards, both at the GPCC and CLP. (GT) BEWARE OF THE EAGLE! An eagle has caused havoc at Pilar injuring at least 15 persons during the last five days. According to information available from the villagers, the bird attacked four persons mostly pedestrians while they were walking along the side of the road on Sunday. They said the bird is mostly seen perched on a mango tree along the NH-17. (GT) SKY BUS PROJECT: The Parliamentary Railway Convention Committee, headed by MP G Ramchandran, on November 21, decided to back the Sky Bus project of Konkan Railway Corporation, which came under dispute after an accident during its trial run in Margao. He said that although the performance of the KRC was not found satisfactory, it was too early to take any decision to dissolve the Corporation and merge it into the mainstream of the Indian Railways. (GT) LAUNCHING BY JAN: G Ramachandran has informed that the sky bus project in Goa will be launched by the end of January 2005. (H) GOVT WILL NOW CONCENTRATE ON MAPUSA: PARRIKAR: After Panaji, Manohar Parrikar has now set sights on his janmabhoomi - Mapusa. He made this clear while laying the foundation stone for a new 230-bed District Hospital at old Peddem, Mapusa, on November 21. "After Panaji, my government will now concentrate on Mapusa," he said while addressing a gathering on this occasion. The new District Hospital, replete with state-of-the-art medical facilities is to be constructed under the aegis of the GSIDC at an estimated cost of Rs.48 crore. (GT) UPGRADED CITY KTC STAND: Though not directly related to IFFI, the KTC bus terminus in Panjim has got a new look. The partially completed project of upgradation of the city bus stand and beautification of the complex would be ready in a day or two. (H) 'RS.1 CR ALLOTTED TO DEVELOP CORJUEM ISLAND': Chief Minister Parrikar has announced the allotment of rupees one crore for developing the picturesque Corjuem island. Speaking after officially inaugurating the Corjuem-Aldona bridge, Mr Parrikar said that the bridge would open several avenues for development of the island. Plans to promote tourism on the island included water sports, a capsule lift, a restaurant, besides a face-lift to the historic Corjuem fort. (H) ITALIAN RAPE ACCUSED IN POLICE CUSTODY: The Italian national, Lazinni Georgio, 56, arrested by the Colva police, on charges of raping a minor girl, has been remanded to 10 days' police custody on November 21. (GT) BUSINESSMEN WORRIED OVER POOR TURNOUT OF TOURISTS: The tourism season has already commenced in the State and will reach its peak in December. While all entrepreneurs associated with the industry have gone gung-ho about the record number of tourists scheduled to visit the State, a gloomy scenario prevails at Palolem. The total number of foreign tourists visiting the scenic beach has left much to be desired. While the flow of domestic tourists remains almost the same as compared to their number last year, one witnesses a marked decline in the foreign tourists. (GT) GUIDE ON OLD GOA: "Old Goa: The Complete Guide", published by Plus Publications and Third Millennium Publishers of Panjim, was released by Fr Romualdo de Souza, Director, Goa Institute of Management Studies, Ribandar, at a simple ceremony held recently. The text of the handy volume, written by Oscar de Noronha, comprises an elucidative essay on the former metropolis as well as a guided tour of the city, with copious notes on its surviving landmarks. It is followed by a biographical sketch of St Francis Xavier. (H) GOA, A HAVEN FOR ANTIQUE SMUGGLERS: In the heat of IFFI, the sensational news of the arrest of antique smugglers from Vasco has gone unnoticed. The local culture-vultures otherwise crying hoarse in the name of conservation of Goa's culture heritage did not respond. The two antique idols valued at Rs.15 million seized by the police at Vasco could have come from some South Indian source. That points to the inter-state and possibly the international dimension of this business. Thousands of similar antiques lie scattered in our State. Hundreds of temples and chapels in the villages are unprotected. Very few antiques from the private collections might have been registered. A multi-crore local market has emerged to restore and recycle antique Goan furniture. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) "BRIDGING THE GAPS THROUGH THE GOSPEL", an art exhibition by 30 renowned artists from Goa, Kolkata, Dhaka, Delhi, Baroda, Mumbai, Chennai, Jaipur, Bangalore and Coimbatore, will be inaugurated at the Old Bishop's Place on 26th November at 6 pm. The exhibition will be on display until January 2, 2005. The inauguration will be presided over by Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao in the presence of Governor of Goa SC Jamir, Maharaja of Baroda, Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The artists have worked on the various aspects of the four Gospels, in paintings, graphics, and sculpture.
