Here's what Wendell Rodricks wrote to me about dress codes for Pilgrims.

There are many places, Turkey to site one, that have a dress code rule that legs, torsos and shoulders must be covered when visiting places of worship. Also, in the case of the Old Goa Basilicas or Goan temples, (like in the other old monuments in some countries) it may be prudent to disallow hiking boots and other heavy footwear that damage the floors. In such cases, tourists are offered lungis to cover both shoulders+torsos and legs. They are forced to hire them at (their cost: Rs.100 to 150) so that if some want to keep them as souvenirs, they may do so.( The profits from the lungi sales go to the temple or church.)

I recommend the same for our Goan monuments (churches, temples, mosques and other old monuments)
