Rene, there's a whole wide world of Free Software out there, where one gets excellent value for *nothing* virtually. *Free* here stands for freedom; but as there's the freedom to also copy software, it ends up costing little or nothing. Other than the need to invest some time in studying the software.
If anyone wants to access Free Software without having to shift to the GNU/Linux platform, just take a look at the GNUWin or TheOpenCD. Excellent stuff. No strings attached! FN
