Please Check at http://goacom.com/goanow/exposition/Exposition2004.htm AMOD KANT RELIEVED: In a move that could trigger a confrontation of sorts with the Centre, the State government on November 25 relieved Director General of Police, Amod Kanth, and directed DIG Muktesh Chander to take charge as the head of the police department. (H) KANT RELIEVED AS DGP: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, told reporters in the IFFI campo office this evening (Nov 25) that the government was not interested in the service of Mr Kant anymore and therefore the DGP had been relieved. He said the DGP had virtually challenged the government authority and in such a situation the government was not prepared to take any chance since the prestigious IFFI was just two days ahead. (NT) CM BOOTS OUT DGP: The outgoing DGP, Amod Kant, refused to respond to the Chief Minister's charges. He earlier told reporters, "I would not like to comment on merit of the order. I am not going to interpret the order. I am relieved with immediate effect by the government of Goa. There is no order from the Central Government. Kanth expressed his sadness at how his tenure was prematurely cut short: "My only regret is that my dreams and ideas have been cut short. I still believe that the Goa Police can be turned into a model force. Given a chance I would love to come back." (GT) CONG PRESSURE ON JAMIR: As expected, the relieving of Director General of Police, Amod Kanth, has had a political fallout. The Congress has now decided up the ante and put pressure on the Governor SC Jamir to take coercive action against the BJP-led government in the State. (GT) CITY TRAFFIC PLAN FOR IFFI: No parking will be allowed along the MG Road as it will be the main artery for vehicular traffic while the Dayanand Bandodkar road will be closed from the ferry point to the Kala Academy junction during the ten-day IFFI. On the inaugural day of IFFI, the entire Dayanand Bandodkar road will be closed right from the New Patto bridge from noon to facilitate the movement of floats parade which is to begin from the GTDC Jetty function from 2.30 pm. (H) CITIZENS URGED TO TRAVEL BY CITY BUSES: The Traffic Police have appealed to the people to prefer traveling by the city buses during the ten-day International Film Festival in Panjim. (H) BETALBATIM PANCHAYAT RESOLUTION AGAINST KASHMIRIS: The Betalbatim village panchayat on November 25 witnessed a furore over reports that Kashmiris are running a readymade garment stall on the beach, which later prompted the body to revoke permission granted to a local person owning the stall. In another significant decision, the panchayat adopted a resolution not to grant NOC to Kashmiris to run stalls in the village and further resolved to prohibit sub-letting of stalls to the Kashmiris. (H) PARALLEL PATTO BRIDGE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, will inaugurate the parallel Patto bridge connecting the new road along the Mandovi river bank today at 10.30 am. Informally talking to reporters outside the city multiplex, Mr Parrikar said the State government had made all out efforts in generating world-class facilities and creating an ambiance which was needed for a global film festival like the IFFI, which is being held for the first time in Goa. (NT) ART FEAST AT MIRAMAR BEACH: Miramar beach will come alive with art forms made of shells, pebbles, knitted palm leaves, etc with 100 sarees flying high during the ten-day International Film Festival of India. Conceptualised by artist Subodh Kerkar, the creative works will adorn half a kilometer of the Miramar beach. Subodh would present his new installations at the beach as part of the celebration. The installation festival will be open to the public. During the festival, Kerkar Art gallery will organize an exhibition of paintings based on the theme 'Cinema' at Calangute from December 1 to 12. (H) IFFI WEBSITE: www.iffigoa.org is the official website of Entertainment Society of Goa for the 35th International Film festival of India. Launched by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on November 26, it will act as an interface between the local organizers, participants, delegates and general public, according to the manager (Media and PR) ESG Sanjay Dhavlikar. (H) NO SET OF LAWS GOVERNS INTER-STATE buses plying between Goa and Mumbai. While some drivers get paid Rs.600 a trip, the other unfortunate ones get paid between Rs.300 and Rs.400. A driver said, "For the drivers of the 15 to 20 buses plying between Margao and Mumbai during the peak season, life revolves around the whims and fancies of the owner. There are some owners who are good and understanding, while some are all out to exploit. (GT) ANOTHER MINOR GIRL RAPED: The Margao police have arrested the owner and manager of hotel in Sanvordem, Georgino Rodrigues and Manuel Barreto respectively, for allowing Augusto Gama alias Sham (29) to stay at the hotel where he raped a 13-year-old girl. Sham had allegedly kidnapped the girl on 18 November and raped her on 24 November night at the hotel. Sham, from Sirvodem, married with two children, is a painter and known to be a notorious character. (GT) LEOPARD SIGHTINGS: After Chinchinim, complaints of leopard sightings in Sinquerim and Canacona have kept the Forest department on their toes during the last one week. The forest department confirmed that a leopard has been sighted at Kalashi village, Canacona, and a team of personnel have noted pug marks in the area. The Department has also received reports of a leopard sighting at Mayem Lake. (H) LEFT ALONE IN A JUNGLE: Kalpesh Deulkar had to face a horrible experience when he travelled in one of the Paulo travels buses from Pune to Margao last Monday. In his complaint to the Margao police, Deulkar has demanded action against the driver of the bus for his carelessness in leaving him in a jungle of Kolhapur at 2 am when he had alighted from the bus to ease himself with the knowledge of the bus driver. (GT) WIND ENERGY: The director and joint secretary of the department of science, technology and environment, Dr NPS Varde, said that the wind energy studies related to Goa are being carried out and they would provide a wind profile with wind patterns in the State, for possible use of wind energy.
