Goanettters,
A big deal is being made over a DGP being relieved of his duties. The
DGP was in Goa for just 5 months. And how many IGPs, DGPs, Commissioners
do we require for a small place like Goa? Goa has functioned very well without
all these IPS officers in the past.
All Goan postings are coveted by the IAS, IPS officers and politicians, who want to become Governors or Chairmen in Public Sector Undertakings, like MPT. I am sure that this will not be easy without some political clout in Delhi.
I am amused at some of the comments on how good Mr. Kanth is! I for one have not heard of any reports that compare Mr. Kanth with the likes of Supercop, Mr. Julio Ribeiro. Of course, not everybody can be like Mr. Ribeiro!
While on the topic of Goa Police and the exit of the DGP, here is a story I would like to share, about the functioning of its top brass. I was talking to this gentleman from the Police Department, a few years ago and he told me a few things about the functioning of the Department and was a bit surprised by what went on. It seems many of their top brass used to ask that Tea, Paan be served all day long - Chai pilao, Paan Khilao -- and never paid for it! It seems all the money had to be somehow paid for by the orderly waiting outside! Don't these guys know that all these things cost money? And guess where all that money came from - It came to a great extent from the bribes collected by the petty police, who stop the common man for some minor traffic offenses or from overloaded buses. They used to pool all that money together, to take care of the chai-pani for their bosses! We definitely look down upon these Police by describing them as "Sakharams". Of course, I am not saying that all the Police officers are corrupt, but we tend to point fingers at the little fellows and ignore the folks at the top.
