GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
Nov 29, 2004

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: "Vaitt xellio raknne aplea xelliancho bhosm kortat."
(Bad herdsmen ruin their flocks.) "domnic fernandes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

"EXPOSITION 2004" PHOTO FEATURE: A small photo feature on the Exposition
of the Sacred Remains of St Francis Xavier which opened at Old Goa on
November 21. Please Check at

PANAJI: AS GOOD AS IT GETS: The last touches of paint on the fences and the
re-doing of the tiles on the ground may appear a bit little late in the day
when the 35th International Film Festival of India is all set to take off
from 29 November. But that's so quintessentially Goan what with its rather
laid-back attitude in the style of letting the world go by while one sits at
the window and gazes in amazement. However, the picture inside the Kala
Academy, the venue of the inauguration event, is in an accelerated mode all
right. The Media Centre is up and press kits are being handed out left,
right and centre to the huge contingent of journalists from the print and
electronic media who want to be stationed before it all begins. (Vithaldas
Hegde in GT)

3000 DELEGATES EXPECTED: It'll be curtains-up with a glittering opening
ceremony at the Kala Academy in Panjim on Monday evening. The Mandovi river
promenade, which also cradles the recently spruced up Kala Academy and the
newly built multiplex, is getting decked up to offer the 1,500-odd delegates
registered for the festival, a carnival of sorts.Over 200 films are slated
to be screened in seven sections: Asian Competition, Cinema of the World,
Indian and foreign retrospectives, tributes and homage, Indian Panorama and
mainstream Indian cinema.A brand new four-theatre multiplex - INOX - and the
spruced up Kala Academy will be festival's venues. (H)

EXPECTED TO ATTEND: Those who are expected to attend the festival include
Amitabh Bachchan, Subhash Ghai, Ashok Amritraj, Preity Zinta, Mani Ratnam,
Rakesh Roshan, Rajkumar Hirani and others. The one event that everyone is
looking forward to is the big bash to be hosted by Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar. IFFI will also be an event to showcase Goan culture through a
selection of music programmes and food fests. Union Minister for Information
and Broadcasting S Jaipal Reddy will inaugurate the Festival, at 5.30 pm o
November 29. Dilip Kumar and Aamir Khan will participate in the inaugural
ceremony. The inaugural film is Mira Nair's "Vanity Fair". Panaji city is
seeing an influx of celebrities for the 10-day event. (GT)

TRAFFIC AWAITING TO CHOKE: Goa police's traffic cell is headed for a
harrowing time for the next two weeks or so with bottle-necks galore
expected to hinder city traffic in view of its plans to close Panjim's
arterial Dayanand Bandodkar road for the IFFI. (H)

GOA IS PERMANENT VENUE, CM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on November 28
claimed that the International Film festival of India will be one of the
highest international standards in six to seven years. Speaking on the eve
of the Festival, he said he had been clearly told that there was no question
of re-think on the decision to convert Goa into a permanent venue for the
annual fete. (GT)

DELEGATE REGISTRATION: On the spot registration at Festival headquarters,
Old GMC Building Campal, Panjim. Delegate fee Rs.200. Two passports size
photographs and bio-date required for registration purpose.

INCLUDE TIATR, KANTARAM: The Dalgado Konkani Akademi, Orda-Candolim, has
appealed to the State government to include Konkani tiatrs and Kantaram as
part of the cultural programmes during the International Film Festival of
India. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Tomazinho
Cardozo said that after reading the advertisement appearing in a section of
the press on Sunday he was surprised to note that although dramas in
Konkani, Marathi, Hindi and English will be staged, the Konkani tiatr does
not find place in the programme. He said that Konkani tiatr is the most
popular dramatic form of Goa. No other stage in Goa has a mass base as
Konkani tiatr enjoys. (GT)

MARIO IS THE KING: Kingfisher, the flagship of United Breweries Limited, has
donned a distinct Goan identity this IFFI. The official beer of IFFI is
available in Goa for the 10 days of the festival in a commemorative pack
designed by Mario Miranda. (H)

70,000 PILGRIMS VISIT OLD GOA: Massive crowds of pilgrims thronged Old Goa
to pay homage to St Francis Xavier throughout the day on Sunday. According
to Exposition Commission, Bosco George, around 70,000 pilgrims attended the
masses both, in the morning and evening. More than 50,000 of them stood in a
queue to kiss the sacred relics, which have been kept for veneration at Se
Cathedral. A large number of pilgrims had also come from other states. (GT)

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION FEAST: The annual feast of Immaculate Conception will
be celebrated on December 8 at Panaji Church. The Concelebrated Mass will be
held at 9.30 am, with rector of the seminary of Rachol, Fr Thomas Aquino
Sequeira, being the main celebrant. The central theme of this year's novena
and feat will be "Nourished by the Holy Eucharist, let us together continue
our pilgrimage to God". (NT)

CALANGUTE RESIDENTS TO HOLD DHARNAS: The residents of Calangute, mostly
shack owners, under the leadership of Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes will
stage dharnas (demonstrations) in front of starred hotels at Sinquerim from
3 pm onwards today to highlight the plight of the shack owners to the
delegates of the International Film Festival of India, who are learnt to be
staying in the hotels. (GT)

BOY COMMITS SUICIDE: Charan Nilkani (15), a IX std student of a city school,
committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of a rope to a bathroom
shower at Santa Cruz on November 27. The boy had performed badly at the
exam, the police added, and he was to accompany his uncle to the school to
see the results. (GT)

REUNION OF LICEU STUDENTS: Former students of Liceu Nacional de Goa now
settled in Portugal and different parts of Goa will organise a Reunion on 19
December this year in Panaji city. The decades-old Associacao Academica de
Goa has taken the initiative to hold the event on a date which would have
150 years of the Liceu. (GT)

TOWER OPPOSED AT MERCES: Citizens of Merces under the banner of Merces
Citizens Committee have strongly opposed the erection of a mobile tower at
Carmichembhat, Merces. (H)
