Tim,
Many thanks for your kind words re my post about the need for Goanet not to be inward looking.

I meant to tell you that I came across an unusual bit of info regarding whether one can be a non believer in God and still part of the Catholic Church.

This may not be entirely apt to the previous discussion we had on email but it is revealing. I went to the funeral very recently of someone I had known well and who died at only 55. His best friend spoke at the funeral and among many things, indicated that at one point, he was keen for his best friend (the one who died) to be the godfather of his new baby. However, the potential godfather indicated that although he was willing, he had to declare that he was more than a lapsed Catholic. He was indeed an atheist. Clearly, this caused some uncertainty for a while but the Catholic priest was eventually agreeable to the arrangement made and the atheist became the godfather of the child!

I would not have believed this account but for my knowledge of the bloke who recounted this story to an audience of about 100 and in the presence of the grown up godchild and the rest of the family in question.

I am sure you will be surprised.
Regards,
Cornel
