The following are some rampant misconceptions about AIDS that are being spread through email by misguided AIDS activists, quacks and crackpots on the occasion of World AIDS Day: FALSE STATEMENT 1. AIDS does not exist. It is a myth created by the medical and pharmaceutical establishment. FALSE STATEMENT 2. AIDS has always existed. It is a new term for a collection of diseases that are already well known, and can be easily treated by alternative therapies. FALSE STATEMENT 3. AIDS is not caused by the HIV virus. The HIV virus is a myth. FALSE STATEMENT 4. The conventional anti-retroviral drugs do not help to treat people with HIV infection or AIDS. They are actually responsible for AIDS. FALSE STATEMENT 5. Alternative medical systems such as Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, etc have cures for AIDS. FALSE STATEMENT 6. Only homosexuals get AIDS. FALSE STATEMENT 7. Use of condoms does not contribute to the prevention of HIV infection. FALSE STATEMENT 8. HIV can be transmitted through air, water, insects or casual contact. FALSE STATEMENT 9. HIV was created in the laboratory by the CIA or the KGB. FALSE STATEMENT 10. A mutated version of HIV that can be transmitted through the air has been discovered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. FALSE STATEMENT 11. Tests for HIV infection are completely unreliable. FALSE STATEMENT 12. AIDS is caused by a deficiency of trace minerals in our diet. FALSE STATEMENT 13. AIDS is a punishment for the sin of homosexuality. FALSE STATEMENT 14.
