Re - Frederick Noronha's on 'Goanet Reader ...' of Dec 5 Very interesting account. Bravo. Apropos 'what all the Goa government has done for its grateful citizens', has anybody enquired what decisions the government took during the past one year when the CM and his officers were personally supervising the civil works till late in the night. That is besides shutting out the CBI from Goa and showing the door to the DCP and announcing belatedly an IT policy. A local paper has quoted the CM as saying this was just a learning experience while a recent 'advertorial' said that for the next IFFI in Goa 'finetuning would be done' and in the next breath said next year it would be bigger and better or something to that effect. Perhaps the CM needs to be reminded that ne goes into a learning experience with a modicum of caution. This was not at all in evidence in the run up to IFFI. Moreover, 'fine tuning' presupposes that a basic setting has been chosen and kept constant. This is contradicted by the allusion to increasing the scale of IFFI. The CM is taking great pride in the hit created by the 'Beach cinema' innovation. No information is forthcoming on how the shows fared at beaches like Baina, Colva and Calangute/Baga. Miramar has been a big hit apparently. But it may created the traffic problems that have marred IFFI. The concert on Saturday reportedly attracted 100,000 people and their vehicles. Panjim's steady state population was recently placed at about 60,000 so the surge has been enormous. Let's hope beach cinema/concerts at Miramar will be carefully reconsidered next time around. If delegates and guests have to be shoe horned into Kala academy then the IFFI pitch will have to be lowered a few decibels at the very least. Instead our CM is all set to go to town with his new found IFFI obsession. One of the major problems the I and B Minister reportedly had was with how IFFI was practically hijacked from the DFF by the Goa government. The DFF's budget for acquiring festival films must have been paltry compared to the tons of money poured into IFFI infrastructure. Hence the Goa govt must have had the upper hand. DFF may have to scout around for a more compliant partner next time to keep the Goa govt in its place. Hence, the decision to host next year's IFFI may take some time to materialise. In the meantime let's hope our CM cools off a bit and gets down to the mundane business of running the Goa government for the entire state rather than just one section of it.
