(GT) DEMPO TO HONOUR FULL CONTRACT: Dempo Sports Club president Srinivas Dempo has promised to honour the full contract of Cristiano de Lima Junior, even though the Brazilian striker, unfortunately, was associated with the club for a little over a month. (H) SKY BUS TESTING TO RESUME: Two and half months after the September 25 accident nearly grounded the indigenously developed Sky Bus project, the Konkan Railway Corporation is finally bracing up to resume further testing of the technology at the Rs.50 crore test rail track erected at Rawanfond in Margao. (H) 31 CONVICTED FOR CHURCH BLASTS: A TADA court in Hyderabad has convicted 31 persons in the church blast cases that caused ripples in Goa, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in June-July 2000. According to reports in the national press, the charge of conspiracy leveled against the 31, belonging to the Deendar Anjuman, was proved and they were sentenced to a four-year term.It may be recalled that a powerful explosion rocked the century-old St Andrew Church in port-town Vasco at about 10.50 am on June 9, 2000, partially damaging the edifice. (H) BUNGALOW BURGLED AT MIRAMAR: Despite the Miramar area being swarmed by crowds due to the ongoing entertainment at the beach, thieves had a field day when they broke open the hind door of a bungalow in St Mary's Colony area and robbed jewelry worth some 70,000 rupees belonging to Ana Sequeira, on December 6 evening. (H) UNDERGROUND CABLING: The Minister for Power, Digambar Kamat, said that the Accelerated Power Development Reforms Programme has accorded its sanction for the third phase of underground cabling in the State of Goa. (H) KONKANI FILM 'SOOD' TO BE SCREENED: The much-awaited Konkani film on Goa's freedom struggle 'Sood' will be screened at the IFFI Inox Multiplex, Panaji, at 3 pm on 9 December. (GT) TEENAGER COMMITS SUICIDE: One Kamla Suresh Harzale (17), a resident of Tisk-Karapur, committed suicide on December 7 morning by jumping off an old wooden bridge at Sanquelim. (GT) CHEAP LIQUOR CAUSE OF LIVER CIRRHOSIS: According to Prasanna Acharya, Assistant Commissioner of Excise, Panjim, "Cheap availability of Indian Made Foreign Liquor" is the reason why people drink more often in Goa. Dr Ruando de Sa, Medical Superintendent, Asilo, another reason that leads to liver cirrhosis "is the adulteration of alcohol". The other problem is the number of bars across the State which is 7,500 (licensed) and 1,200 shops that sell liquor. (Nerita Baptista in Herald) CANDOLIM SHACK OWNERS PROTEST: The demolition squad of the tourism department which had gone to demolish shacks at the Candolim beach on December 7 returned empty handed as some shack owners protested the demolition alleging that the department was carrying out selective demolition. Seeing the squad a large number of people, particularly shack owners, protested at their being selectively targeted by the authorities. (NT) MINISTER'S CAR DAMAGED: The official car of Law Minister, Mr Francis D' Souza, was damaged when it was involved in an accident at Khorlim on December 7 morning. However, no one was injured in the mishap. (NT) 'OCEAN TO SKY' TREK, the annual All India Trekking Expedition for the NCC cadets from different parts of the country, takes off today. The first of the eight batches of the expedition would be flagged off at 8.30 am from the base camp, Fatorda Stadium, Margao. The expedition will cover 115 kms through five staging camps at Chandranath Hill, Quepem, Bali, Betul and Varca. (GT) 'DIVJOTSAV' AT BICHOLIM: Palkhi procession to be held at Barajan on 11 December will mark the annual "Divjotsav" in Bicholim. The procession will then return to the temple at night. Thousands of devotees are scheduled to participate in the procession. (GT) KR'S COASTAL KARNATAKA TOURS: The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd recently lunched its coastal Karnataka tour that takes one through natural forests, green valleys, perennial rivers and pristine beaches. The four-day tour begins from Mumbai with accommodation being provided at the three-star Raioltel at Kumta, which has twin-bedded rooms and a full-fledged restaurant. The tour takes one to the Gokarna temple and Om beach, Jog falls, gigantic rock formations of Yana, tallest Shiva statue at Murdeshwar, Marvanthe beach and other places of attraction. Details: www.konkanrailway.com (GT) GOANS CELEBRATE ST XAVIER'S FEAST IN ROME: The Goan community namely the priests, religious, laity, along with Hindu brethren celebrated the feast of St Francis Xavier in Rome. The solemn mass in Konkani was celebrated in the famous Church of "Gesu", the principal church of the Jesuit order. It is in this church that the right arm of St Francis is venerated. The main celebrant was Fr Romeo Monteiro. The mass ended with the great chorus of "San Francisku Xaviera, Tuji Kuddu Goem Xhara". (H) KITE FESTIVAL: With the culmination of the ongoing IFFI on December 9, the three-day Goa Kite Carnival will begin at Miramar Beach, Panaji, to entertain the crowd from December 10 to 12. The event has been organised and conceptualized by Ajay Prakash, CEO of Nomad Travels and the Nomad Heritage Trust. Indian Airlines are the travel partners. The Goa Kite Carnival has enjoyed unmitigated success over the last two years. Mr Shailendra Mehta said kite fliers from the US, the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Singapore, Germany and Australia, besides from several states from across India would participate. (NT) SUPPORT THE CINEMA, NOT THE CIRCUS: IFFI must stay, but the government-controlled circus must go. The two things are diverse and the sooner the government of Goa realizes this, the better. The film festival needs to be held in Goa because the venue is great and the facilities are superb. The government's role begins and ends there. Beyond this, the government should not spend its time, energy and money in managing film festivals. It's a job to be left to professionals.
