"domnic fernandes" [EMAIL PROTECTED] GOA CELEBRATES LIBERATION DAY: Goa is all set to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of its Liberation today, 19 December. Flag hoisting ceremonies will be ported in all the talukas. The main function will be held at Parade Ground Campal where Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar will unfurl the tricolour, give the National salute, inspect the parade, present awards to outstanding personalities and address the people, at 9.15 am. The Governor SC Jamir will host a reception at the lawns of Raj Bhavan in the evening at 5.00 pm. The Raj Bhavan will be illuminated on 19 December and entry will be given to the public to see the illumination. However, their entry into Raj Bhavan is restricted. (WE-GT) FILM ON GOA'S LIBERATION DRAWS FLAK: A documentary on Goa's Liberation movement, which has been sent by the Education Department to educations institutions to be shown on Sunday (Liberation Day) to the students, has drawn flak from some academic bodies. The Diocesan Society of education and Diocesan Service Centre alleged that the contents of the VCD, which recorded the Liberation movement is highly communal and appears to be aimed at fanning communal hatred and drive a wedge among the communities of Goa. (WE-GT) TRAGIC END TO FREEDOM FIGHTERS: Families of two freedom fighters from Canacona were cast in a pall of gloom on the eve of Liberation Day. While freedom fighter Devidas alias Vishnu Pai of Chavdi expired at GP Hospital in Ghaziabad on 15 December under mysterious circumstances, the body of his friend Laximan Jiva Bhagat, also a freedom fighter of Kumegal, Poinguinim, was found in Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh. They were both 75 and had left Canacona on 10 December and booked accommodation at Goa Sadan but none of them managed to report there. (WE-GT) "GOA'S RURAL AREAS A NEGLECTED LOT": Governor SC Jamir on December 18 made an impassioned plea to Goa's political leadership to accord topmost priority for the development of the villages and ensure that the standard of living in the rural areas are brought on par with semi-urban areas. "You cannot claim that Goa is an advanced State if the rural areas lack roads, health care, social welfare, etc," he said at a meeting held by Navelim Constituency Citizens Committee, and called for evolving a planning system whereby enough attention is paid to village development. (H) INSUFFICIENT STAFF: Shortage of medical staff, lackadaisical attitude of the authorities, lack of proper facilities at different health centres has forced many rural people to face innumerable hardships pertaining to primary healthcare. Due to lack of facilities at Sanguem primary health centre and negligent attitude of the doctors, hundreds of patients from Verlem to Barabomi are forced to dance to the tune of the medical staff there or face unexpected destiny. If Parrikar played host to the IFFI party on the Corjuem bridge, the GPYC has sought permission for holding a grand party for the Indian cricket team for three days, beginning from January 16, 2005. The Youth Congress would not mind if permission is granted on either the two bridges across Mandovi river, the Zuari bridge or the Corjuem bridge. 'YOUNG NATURALIST AWARD': Two Goans wildlifers, Aaron Lobo and Rahul Alvares, were among the three from the country who bagged the prestigious 'Sanctuary" magazine's "Young Naturalist Award" for this year. Lobo did his postgraduate studies at the Wildlife Institute in Dehra Dun and his work is based on sea snakes. He stood first (from among 150 presentations from 40 countries) at the Annual Conference in Conservation Science at the University of Cambridge this year. Alvares is a serpetologist and snake-handler, who will complete this MSc this year. He has two books to his credit - 'Free from School' and 'The Call of the Snake'. The Young Naturalist Award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs.10,000. (WE-GT) 'TEEN' FAME FOR ALDONA LAD: When 15-year-old Amaro Fernandes of Maina Vaddo in Aldona met with an accident in February 2003, a multiple fracture on his right elbow threatened to deprive him of his beloved violin for good. Not only did Amaro's grit to get back to his violin help him overcome the physical and mental trauma, his violin saw him orchestrate an unexpected triumph barely 21 months later, when Amaro was adjudged the Teen of the Year 2004 at an all-India contest in Mumbai. Besides a trophy, Amaro, a soft-spoken SSC student at St Thomas Boy's High School, Aldona, was awarded a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and a gift hamper worth about Rs.7,000 from the various sponsors.
