Dear Sir, We are currently assembling a database on European Studies on India in the humanities and the social sciences (European Studies on India Database: ESIND). The aim is to include all scholars or researchers (either linked to a university or another organisation) who are doing research on India and who are either citizens of -- or working in -- one of the 25 European Union Member States. When finished, the database will be freely accessible to all on the Research Centre's website, which is currently being set up. Hereby we hope to facilitate the collaboration and the creation of networks among European scholars of India. Furthermore, we are trying to get a general image of the kind of research that is being done. In the first stage, we have gathered the data of as many scholars as possible through the internet -- at the websites of universities and other institutions. Obviously, this will not be exhaustive. In the second stage, therefore, we are sending letters to scholars in the 25 E.U. Member States, who may be familiar with the studies on India being done in their country. We would like to ask those scholars whether or not they are aware of who is doing research on India in their country in any of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Area Studies, Art History & Archeology, Cultural Studies, Comparative Religious Studies, Economy, Ethnology, History, Indology, Linguistics, Literature Studies, Political Science, Post-Colonial Studies, Religious Studies, Sociology, South-Asian Studies. This list is not exhaustive and any discipline in the social sciences or humanities can be added. The fields included in every entry of the database are: Name; First Name; Country; Institute; Faculty/Department; Discipline; Function; Title/Degree; Research Interest; Address; Telephone; Fax; Email; URL (of a personal or institutional website). Right now, we're searching for this kind of information in Portugal. Would you be so kind as to inform us of any persons who are doing research on India in your institute or department, faculty, in your university or outside it, and providing us maybe with the aforementioned much needed data (i.e. Name; First Name; Country; Institute; etc.)? If you could not provide us with such information, could you then maybe refer us to someone who could? As we are working with a strict deadline, we would be very obliged if you could provide us with these data as soon as possible. Sincerely, -- Thomas Delrue Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap Ghent University, Belgium http://www.cultuurwetenschap.be
