(GT) DESPICABLE FILM: The 68-minute-long docu-drama issued by the state Education Department for viewing by school students on Goa Liberation Day spills over with plenty of blood, gore, violence and 20-odd minutes dedicated exclusively to the Inquisition. All this while the Rane's Revolt gets about 2 minutes and the Pinto Revolution just lip service, literally. The film does not begin with the certificate issued by the Central Board of Film Certification but begins with about 20 minutes of the Portuguese invasion of Goa and the atrocities perpetrated on the Goan people. (GT) SHOCK AND ANGER: While the news of the content of the controversial film on Goa's liberation struggle has spread, it led to a feeling of shock and anger in various circles at the attempt to distort history and also prompted some to convene meetings to discuss the issue. (GT) TWO YOUTHS KILLED IN MISHAP: Ameya Prakash Phadte (21), and Saurabh Shekar Sawkar (20), were killed when Phadte lost control of his Yamaha motorcycle opposite the Kala Academy, at around 11.50 pm on December 21. The vehicle slammed into the median at a high speed when the youth were thrown off, before hitting a nearby electrical pole and then came to a stop almost 50 metres from the point of initial impact. (GT) CHURCHILL'S SON ESCAPES SHOOTING BID: Former Goa chief minister and Congress MP Churchill Alemao's son, Savio, had a narrow escape on December 21 when a person opened fire at him in Jhabua town near Indore following a minor scuffle, police said. The incident occurred in when Savio and his friend were returning in the lift from the eighth floor of Jhabua Tower and were enjoying music in the lift. One Rohit Verma, who joined them from the seventh floor, objected to their movements in the lift and told them to stand quietly. (H) SALCETE VILLAGERS SAY NO TO MOBILE TOWERS: On the occasion of the observance of 'National Consumer Rights Day' in Goa, Consumer Forum volunteers from Assolna, Betalbatim, Benaulim, Cansaulim, Cuncolim, Loutulim, Majorda, Navelim, Nuvem and Velim under the banner of Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network held an awareness action in Margao to highlight the consumer concerns about the installation of mobile towers in residential areas. The slogan of the action was "if you do not respect our right to know, then we will enforce our right to say No!!!" (GT) TEST TRIAL OF SKY BUS SUCCESSFUL: After a gap of two months, the test trial of the Konkan Railway Corporation's sky bus proved successful on December 21 in Margao when it moved at the speed of 10 kilometres per hour. Eight top officials of the KRC, including engineers and representatives of the Austria company, Elin Ebg, which has supplied motor for the sky bus, were also present during the test trail. MD of KRC, Mr B Rajaram, informed that the damaged bogies have been repaired and installed. "All the mistakes traced in the sky bus mishap have been rectified," he added. (NT) OLD WOMAN ASSAULTED, ROBBED: Unknown persons on December 21 night entered the house of one Lucy Fernandes (80) of Bamanvada-Camurlim, assaulted her, tied her to the bed and robbed her of gold ornaments worth around Rs.30,000. Fernandes, who sustained head injuries, has been admitted to the GMC hospital at Bambolim. (GT) BODY RECOVERED FROM SEPTIC TANK: The Colva police recovered the body of one Carmelina Menezes (60) from a septic tank at Gomes vaddo, Majorda, on December 21. However, they could not throw any light whether there was any foul play. (H) SEX RATIO DECLINING IN GOA: Males in Goa outnumber females and hence the sex ratio in the State is declining. Interestingly, the females in rural South Goa outnumber the males due to outmigration of the males to the urban areas. The rural population of North Goa district is higher than its urban population, while the rural population of South Goa is lower than its urban population. These are the findings of the Directorate of Census Operations of Goa. (NT) GOA HAS 15,749 DISABLED: Goa has some 15,749 disabled persons which is approximately 1.17 per cent of its 13.4 lakh population, according to an analysis of the Census 2001 data done by MS Kulkarni, senior lecturer in demography at Goa Medical College's preventive and social medicine department. According to Kulkarni's analysis, presented at a symposium at a city hotel on December 21, the movement-impaired formed the single largest block accounting for over 31 per cent of the total disabled. Visually and mentally impaired followed next. (H) NO HUMANS IN JAIL WITH A VIEW: The Aguada Central Jail campus may have a view to die for, but its interiors are far from humane. Housed in the precincts of the old Aguada Fort, one official points out that even the Portuguese regime did not find it a safe place to house their prisoners and used the Quepem jail for that purpose. But the wisdom has clearly escaped the attention of successive state governments, who have continued using the centuries old structure to house Goa's main jail. Emy Pascole (27), and Italian national, was proceeding on a Hero Honda to Palolem along with his wife and daughter. On a sharp turn at Patnem, they collided with a Honda Active driven by English national Will Clarke (21). Pascole and his nine-year-old daughter Tenzin sustained injuries while his wife escaped unhurt. (H) SILVIANO'S NOVEL RELEASED: A Goan novel "The Sixth Night" written by Canadian Goan author, Silviano C Barbosa, was released on December 21 at Clube Vasco de Gama, Panjim. Barbosa said that it was his dream for over 12 years to write the book. The novel revolves around the Goan village life, customs and traditions, the ugly caste systems and discrimination. The novel also makes a transition from Goan life to life overseas, mainly the UK, Portugal, Germany and Canada.
