BANGALORE, DHNS: Enraged by the banning of Shobha Yatra and imposition of the prohibitory orders in Chikmagalur, the BJP and Sangh Parivar have decided to boycott the government-sponsored Datta Jayanthi celebrations at Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district. However, the saffron brigade has resolved to take out the Shobha Yatra from Chikmagalur to Bababudangiri on December 25 despite restrictions. A decision to this effect was taken by leaders of BJP and Sangh Parivar in Bangalore on Friday. Speaking to Deccan Herald, BJP leader Jagadish Shettar said that his party had been forced to take such a decision in wake of the ban on the Yatra. The Yatra is part of the Jayanti. When we are not allowed to take out the Yatra and also conduct rituals like homa and havana, we find no point in participating in the Jayanti. However, we want to take out the Yatra to protest the imposition of the ban. People from across the State are going to participate in the procession in large numbers, he said. He said party leaders including Ananth Kumar, B S Yediyurappa and D H Shankaramurthy would go to Chikmagalur to take part in the Shobha Yatra. Chikmagalur MLA C T Ravi told Deccan Herald that the Sangh Parivar activists would celebrate Datta Jayanthi atop Bababudangiri at a later date. He said, we are not going to participate in the Sarakari Krupaposhita Hindu Virodhi Jayanti. The Chief Minister has gone back on his words of allowing rituals at the temple. The devotees have been allowed only to have darshan, he added. Meanwhile, VHP regional secretary B N Murthy, in a release, asked the VHP activists not to come to Chikmagalur. Instead, they should celebrate Datta Jayanthi in all the districts on December 26 and take out Shoba Yatras at their places, he said. Even as the Sangh Parivar decided to boycott the Datta Jayanthi celebrations, the state government has indicated that it is not ready to take chances with the law and order situation. On Friday night, Chief Minister N Dharam Singh reviewed the law and order situation in Chikmagalur district along with top officials of the police and home department. The Chief Minister is learnt to have directed the police to take all precautionary measures to ensure that communal harmony as well as law and order situation is not affected during the Datta Jayanthi celebrations.
