Confusing World: Last week, I attended a talk in Utica, NY, by an individual with a Konkani name. He was very knowledgeable about his subject and spoke very well. Magir, he told us, he was born (third generation) in South Africa. He calls himself South African. But he grew up in Nairobi, Kenya. He studied in Surrey, England. Now he resides in Buffalo, USA. He is married to a Gujarati girl. The only non-English language he speaks is Swahili.
He reminded me of my study in London in 1977, where I attended a Goan function. I met a young lad of about 15 years. I asked him who he was. He said "Truthfully, I don't know! I was born in Africa but I am not an African. I am supposed to be Goan but have never been there and don't know what it is. I am now living in England and supposed to be English, but I am not white." Food for thought! Borem Confusaum murree. :=)) Aka munta 'Identity Crises'. :=)) Have things changed? Are we doing anything if this is a problem or a potential setback? Regards, GL
