TSUNAMI TOLL TOPS 1,16,000: The death toll from Sunday's tsunamis has jumped
sharply to over 1,16,000 after Indonesia reported nearly 80,000 people were
killed in that country alone. (GT)

FRESH TSUNAMI SCARE PROVES UNFOUNDED: in the wake of reports about fresh
tsunamis hitting Eastern India, the State government went into high alert on
Thursday and informed hotels not to allow clients to enter the water as a
precautionary measure. (GT)

CENTRE LOWERS ALERT: Goa which was earlier in the day put on alert after a
fresh note of warning was received by district authorities of the
possibility of another tsunami tidal wave hitting the Indian Ocean, heaved a
sigh of relief as nothing unusual was experienced.With the centre
withdrawing its 'alert' instructions, the situation returned to normal on
Thursday evening. (H)

THE HERALD RELIEF FUND: Herald is concerned about the plight and welfare of
thousands of people who have been affected by the terrible tragedy. Herald
Publications is setting up a fund, The Herald Relief Fund, where we appeal

collaboration with Caritas Goa, will disburse the funds to the victims of

All donations above Rs.200 will be mentioned in the paper and the donations

NOTHING COMMUNAL IN DOCUMENTARY: FREEDOM FIGHTERS: About 150 freedom
fighters who watched the controversial documentary at a special screening
held at Kala Academy by the education department stated that the documentary
is factual yet it fails to do justice to large contributions of freedom
fighters. (H)

HELLO CM.RAVES ARE HAPPENING! If you are in Anjuna at this time of the year
you surely won't miss a rave party. Never mind the Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar's statement, "If you inform me of a rave party when it is on, I
will come in my private vehicle" or "show me, I will take action
 immediately". Incidentally, a rave party was kicking off at a well-known
party zone in Anjuna on Thursday (December 30) since morning. Loud music was
playing, but when contacted the Anjuna PI Lawrence D'Souza said that the
party had prior permission and hence the police could not stop the party.

CITIZENS CAN COMPLAIN ONLINE: With the launching of its website wherein
citizens can lodge complaints online, the State vigilance department is
expecting more members of the public to blow the whistle on corrupt
government servants. "Anybody can log in at http://vigilance.goa.gov.in and
register as user under his own id and password," the director of vigilance,
Mr Ashwini Kumar told The Navhind Times on December 30. (NT)

ASSEMBLY SESSION IN JAN: The five-day session of the State legislative
assembly beginning on January 10, next year will mainly witness debates
related to the recently concluded International Film Festival of India. (NT)

TOURISTS FLOCK TO S GOA: This year's Christmas and New Year celebrations
have attracted a large number of tourists to the coastal areas in South Goa.
Several hotels along the coast have been booked both by foreign and domestic
tourists looking to usher in the New Year on the pristine beaches of South

IT'S RAINING CELEBS FOR THE NEW YEAR: Even the International Film Festival
of India did not attract this many stars. It is clear that New Year's Eve is
everybody's favourite time in Goa. The glam brigade is already in town even
as more tinsel-town starlets, businessmen and politicians continue to stream
in to their favourite New Year's Eve watering holes and party locales. (GT)

BIODIVERSITY PANEL: Goa takes the lead in constituting a Biodiversity Board
to monitor matters pertaining to conservation of biological diversity, and
'sustainable/equitable' use of biological resources. (H)

VENERATION OF XAVIER RELICS TO END: The last day for the veneration of the
Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier will be January 1 and there will be no
veneration on the concluding day of the Exposition on January 2. The Sacred
Relics will be carried back in procession from the Se Cathedral to the
Basilica of Bom Jesus at 8.30 am followed by a Solemn Pontifical Mass
presided over by the Archbishop Emeritus of Goa and Daman, Rev Raul N

KIRTAAN SAMMELAN: The 25th anniversary of the Kirtan Sammelan will be held
today at the holy precincts of Shree Navdurga temple, Madkai. Around 300
Kirtankars from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka are scheduled to participate

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS: Kala Academy Goa in association with Gujrat State
Lalit Kala Academy is organizing an exhibition of paintings by Gujarat
artistes at Art Gallery of Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, from 7 to 10

GOA GRIND: COMPLETING 48 HRS: "Mamus 5, 6, 7, 8 yo! The signature slogan of
the Goa Grinders rung out yet again as they crossed 48 hours and are now
inching their way towards breaking the previously set record of 55 hours.
Spirits are still ablaze, and willpower is going strong amongst the dancers
even though 2 of them, Rahul and Pradeep, were forced to retire from the
event after losing consciousness on Thursday.With the amount of
determination the dancers have, a new Guinness record is bound to be set.

'PANJIM ABLAZE': As part of the mega-event "Panjim Ablaze" organised by
Primeslots Events Pvt Ltd in association with the Entertainment Society of
Goa supported by the Government of Goa, is being organised every evening at
the Cornice Street opposite the Old Goa Medical college. On December 31,
popstar "Saveri" will perform along with Goa's top band Harmony at 7 pm. (H)

DD'S NEW YEAR WITH VEEAM: Goa Doordarshan will enthrall the viewers with a
special telecast this New Year eve on 31st Dec at 6.30 pm.Also participating
are Raisa, Tracy Tavares and Alfonso Bond Braganza. It is a song and dance
programme in Konkani and English. Veeam who is a popular Goan Jazz singer,
has earlier taken part in musical shows by late Chris Perry, Jazzy Joe and
other musicians. She regularly performs at various hotels, fetes and dances.
