GL responds: Congratulations to the British and all others for the donations to this great cause. As we compare what each other do, let's not get overboard. In many countries, all efforts are centralized like their political system.
In USA, the economy is a partnership between the private sector (major partner) and the Government. Hence the donations will flow from the government, NGOs, Corporations - big and small, and individuals. The pharmaceuticals are likely to be the biggest donor corp. and others with branches in the affected countries. Many US corporations in addition to their own donation have announced plans to match their employees' contribution. Nice way / incentive to double the donations. The Catholic Charities of USA has announced a pledge of 25 million dollars to the people and countries of Southeast Asia. The archbishop of Washington DC will visit Sri Lanka to view firsthand and report to the Catholic Church and the congregation in the USA. Next week there'll be a special collection in our church for the Catholic Charities commitment. Gabe Menezes: The U.K. has upped it aid to 50,000,000 becoming the highest donor in the World - If the U.S.A. did likewise the amount that the U.S.A. would have to give would be seven times as much. The people of this country donated 1,000,000 an hour in the first 24 hours. Makes proud to be British! Cheers,
