Dear Friends, We from the Goa DESC Resource Centre are getting ready to print the next three Friday Balcao booklets. These booklets are a compilation of 30 Friday Balcao discussions, held at the Resource Centre over the period of one year. Over the last 5 years we have covered over 120 different topics like homeopathy, nutrition, education, disability rights, tourism, workers rights, violence against women, heritage, animal rights, law and judiciary, children etc. We have also had open discussions on road safety, telephone problems, garbage, mobile phone towers, electricity, police, etc. Some of our prominent speakers have been Freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar, Ex MP and lecturer Adv. Amrut Kasar, Pharmacist Raj Vaidya, criminal lawyer Adv. Jos Peter D'Souza, Dr. Ms. Promod Salgaoncar, historian Prajal Sakhardande, environmentalist Rajendra P. Kerkar and Trade Unionist Com. Narayan Palekar. The booklets are visualized as handbooks meant for consumer forums, schools, colleges, workers, women, teachers, NGO's, religious groups, service clubs and citizens. It is meant to expose a wide audience to a range of issues affecting people, to get them to think and urge them to 'act' positively, in their own little way, to solve the problem. The booklets will cover the issues discussed at the Balcao besides include a section on the laws applicable, important phone numbers of Government officials and local NGOs and a section called 'what you can do' which ismeant to give the reader ideas on how to pursue the discussion and disseminate information at their village level and in the organizations they may belong too, be it the PTA or NSS unit, or in the service Clubs. We see the articles in the booklet further enriched by 'Social Ads', which will carry social messages that supplement the articles that precede them.
