RLY COMMISSION TO ASSESS SKYBUS VIABILITY: The indigenously developed Sky
Bus technology will now come under the scanner of the Commissioner of
Railway Safety to assess the technical viability and other safety aspects
before its commercial use, even as the Konkan Railway Corporation has
decided to engage private companies to execute and implement the project in
major cities. (H)

DUAL CITIZENSHIP TO ALL OVERSEAS INDIANS: Accepting the long-standing demand
of overseas Indians, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, announced on
January 7, granting dual citizenship to all those who migrated from India
after January 26, 1950. Inaugurating a conference of overseas Indians
attended by nearly 2,500 delegated from 61 countries, the Prime Minister
also asked the Indian diaspora to invest in infrastructure development in
India as well as in extending education to the vast population. He promised
that the government would work towards creating an environment conducive to
the "growth of spirit of adventure and enterprise". (PTI report in NT)

GU PANEL TO DEBATE ON PHOTOCOPIES OF PAPERS: The Executive Council of the
Goa University will meet on January 8 to decide on the decision taken by the
Academic Council to provide the law students conditional photo-copies of
their answer sheets of the examination held last year in which the pass
percentage was just 16%. (H)

DEMAND FOR DESTRUCTION OF VCDS ON FREEDOM STRUGGLE: Not satisfied with Chief
Minister Manohar Parrikar's announcement to withhold the screening of the
controversial VCD on Goa's freedom struggle, Lok Shakti has demanded the
destruction of all copies of the VCD, saying it depicts over-dramatised
picture of Goa's distorted history and has the potential to tear the fabric
of communal harmony existing between Hindus and Christians. (H)

'FILM ON GOA'S FREEDOM STRUGGLE INACCURATE': The government's version of Goa
's freedom struggle, as encapsulated in its controversial VCD, has an many
as 30 inaccuracies in the documentary. This was stated by journalist and
freedom fighter Flaviano Dias, at the screening of the documentary at the
Xavier Centre of Historical Research at Porvorim, which drew widespread
criticism from the large crowd at the programme. (H)

PLAINT IN SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE DISMISSED: The Children's Court has dismissed
a complaint filed by a resident of Ribandar against the parish priest for
alleged sexual assault on the ground that a private complaint is not
maintainable under Goa Children's Act, 2003. (GT)

WEST COAST ALMOST SAFE FROM TSUNAMI WAVES: NIO CHIEF: According to existing
records, the seismic activity in and around the Arabian Sea is non-existent
and hence the possibility of a tsunami hitting the west coast of India is
negligible, the National Institute of Oceanography Director, Dr Satish
Shetye, said on January 7. Dr Shetye was answering questions from the media
after he made a presentation to them on 'An intro to tsunamis, with special
reference to the events of December 26, 2004'. (NT)

NIO DIRECTOR STRESSES ON STRICT COASTAL REGULATIONS: The Director of
National Institute of Oceanography, Dr SR Shetye, on January 7, expressed
the need to examine the coastal regulations so as to reduce the impact of
natural disasters like tsunami on human population. (H)

CALANGUTE 'POWERLESS': Residents of Naikavaddo, Calangute, have been at the
receiving end of erratic electricity supply even as they squarely placed the
blame on nearby tourist establishments for hogging the power supply. (GT)

BAMBOLIM FEAST: The Confraria da Igreja de Bambolim will celebrate the feast
of Our Lady of Bethlehem on January 9 at the Bambolim church. The
concelebrated High Mass will be at 10 am with Archbishop Emeritus Raul
Gonsalves as the main celebrant. A drama "Goencho Saib" by Prince Jacob will
be staged at 8 pm near the Govt Primary School. (H)

JHARKHAND PARTIES SEEK PERMISSION TO CONTEST ON TWO LEAVES SYMBOL: Goa's
regional outfit, the United Goans Democratic Party was once again approached
by the Jharkhand Democratic Front - a conglomerate of smaller political
parties - for the use of the Two Leaves symbol in the ensuing polls. In the
outgoing Assembly, two of the seven candidates fielded by Jharkhand
Democratic Front under the Two Leaves symbol had won the polls, of which one
rose to become the state's Tourism Minister. (H)

ONE HELD FOR MOLESTATION: The Panjim police have arrested a contract worker
Tushar Shetye in connection with the molestation of two minor British girls
in a ladies' washroom of the Marriott Hotel at Miramar. (H)

DRUG AT GTDC SHOP: The Food and Drug Administration sleuths on January 7
raided a public telephone booth operated from a shop at Calangute and seized
"Ketamine" drug injection worth Rs.1.30 lakh from the premises. The shop
belongs to the Goa Tourism Development Corporation and is rented to one N
Azavedo. (NT)

CM PATS DEPTS: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, has praised the working
of concerned departments in making the 43-day solemn Exposition of St
Francis Xavier a success. The staff posted on duties shouldered their
responsibility with great zeal and enthusiasm, he said. (H)

TALK ON 'INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF GOA': The Goa Chamber of Commerce and
Industry, Panaji, will organize a talk on 'Industrial Development of Goa -
Need for SEZ" at its convention hall, Panaji, at 5 pm on 10 January, so as
to take this idea further and create awareness amongst the Goan authorities.

PALOLEM RISES 'N' SHINES: Tsunami waves that destroyed four shacks in
Palolem beach have not effected the psyche of Palolem residents. The beach
itself is choc-a-bloc with foreigners. All 300 tents lined along the beach
are occupied and it is business as usual despite the terrifying Tsunami

RASTA ROKO AT VELGUEM: Agitated over the dust pollution affecting their
areas, residents of Velguem poured on to the streets on Thursday, 6 January,
and stopped all mining trucks carrying iron ore. According to information
available, the villagers were peeved over the 'lackadaisical attitude' of a
mining company over demands to stop plying of trucks after 6 pm. (GT)

ADARKAR BAGS AWARD: Ms Nayana Adarkar bagged the Late Champa Prasad Award
for her poetry collection "Mansavar" at the 5th All India Poetess' Meet held
at Hyderabad between December 20 and 22. Her collection also received
Konkani Bhasha Mandal's award for 2004. (NT)

'GOA MESSENGER MAN OF THE YEAR': Director of Childline 1098, Goa, and the
Don Bosco Salesian Society Services, Fr Francis Silveira, has been named the
'Goa Messenger Man of the Year 2004' for his immense service to distressed
children in the State, despite great odds, and as such making Goa a safer
