GL responds: I read/studied the response of Uday Bhembre to the VCD film. It was a great analysis of the film and an enlightened explanation of its shortcomings. Not only can the script writers of the VCD learn from Mr. Bhembre post; but so can the rest of us on cyber Goa. The following quote from Mr. Bhembre post reemphasizes the points made in the dialogue we had about the Inquisition in January to April 2004.
Many Amchem Christaums kept writing that the Inquisition was against the Hindus. And some claimed it was not against the Europeans! I compliment Mr. Bhembre for the post and thank him for teaching us all. Regards. Uday Bhembre: Chairman of Vichar Vibhag The fact that conversion and inquisition affected only four talukas of Tiswadi, Salcete, Mormugao and Bardez is suppressed and an impression is given that the religious persecution took place all over Goa. The fact that inquisition punished the converts (Jews who had come from Portugal had become 'New Christians' and the local converts) and it is they who bore the brunt of the religious frenzy has been suppressed. Hindus were affected marginally and mostly by the dictats of the inquisition regarding socio-cultural customs. However, an impression is given that all Goans are affected.
