NO GOA TABLEAU AT DELHI R-DAY PARADE: For the first time after many years, Goa tableau will not feature in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26. Goa's entry for the parade, which was based on handicrafts of Goa, has been rejected by a Defence ministry sub-committee, sources said. Goa tableau used to get a lot of attention in the national capital for its creative work. Several prizes had been won by the Goa troupe in the past. First it was entertainment king Francisco Martins and in the last two years it was V Khedekar who also brought the prestigious first prize to the State. (H) M BOYER AMONG PADMA AWARDEES: Goa's Konkani stage stalwart Manuel Santana Aguiar, popularly known as M Boyer, was selected for the Padma Bhushan award. Boyer was among a galaxy of ninety-six personalities chosen from diverse fields for this year's Padma awards.Hailing from Raia, M Boyer has been at the forefront of tiatr for over 60 years. Besides writing, producing and directing over 30 plays and over 5,000 performances in his lifetime, M Boyer is the only Goan tiatrist to have been honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. "Sonvsar Sudhorlo", "Ghor Dukhi, Gaum Sukhi" and "Chintnam Zalim Sopnnam" are some of his well-known tiatrs. (H) SUSPENSE OVER THE 'HOLE' TRUTH: The work has started for the removal of grounded vessel "MV River Princess". But who were the men tinkering with the ship for a few weeks till recently.While there was speculation that the contractor who was awarded the work for the refloating and towing the vessel had started the work unofficially, a few days back, two top officials from CrossChem International Limited denied it.Two gaping holes have been cut in the side of the vessel, which has reportedly settled 12 metres in the sand. When viewed from the sea, starting from the deck, the entire ship is in various stages of rust. (GT) WORK TO REFLOAT "RIVER PRINCESS' BEGINS: The operation to refloat the MV River Princess has commenced but the Tourism department's move to cordon off the beach has ruffled the feather of some shack owners. While CrossChem requires about a 100-metre stretch of the beach for stacking steel plates and other material, four shack owners have been asked to shift their base opposite the ship to alternate sites. The four shacks are Kingfisher's Beach Shack, Rama's Shack, Deva's Shack and Coconut Palm's Shack. (GT) NEW DGP: The newly appointed Director General of Police of Goa, UK Katna, will assume charge in Panjim on January 31. Katna, a senior IPS officer of the 1974 batch, was recently pasted as DGP of Goa by the Union Home ministry. He has since been relieved from Arunachal Pradesh. (H) FALEIRO OPENS COMPUTER SCIENCE LAB: "We should work towards making Goa University a centre of excellence and it should be able to compete globally. We should not restrict the functioning of the University only to the State of Goa by also try to access markets abroad," said Eduardo Faleiro, Rajya Sabha MP. He was speaking after inaugurating the new Computer Science Laboratory built under the MPLAD scheme at Goa University, at a cost of Rs.18.1 lakh approximately. (GT) BRITISH COUPLE ROBBED: British national Ian Senior (57) and his wife were robbed of their gold ornaments and digital camera at knife point at Zalor, Cavelossim beach, on January 24 afternoon. The incident occurred when Ian and his wife were proceeding on their bicycles towards the beach, when suddenly two persons appeared on the scene and at knife point ordered them to move towards the bushes. (NT) 'MHOZO HERO' ALBUM RELEASED: A new Konkani musical album 'Mhozo Hero' was released by rev Fr Hector D'Souza, Jesuit Provincial for South Asia on Sunday, at the Kala Academy auditorium Panjim. 'Mhozo Hero', produced by Alfonso Bond Braganza for Music House, Mapusa, consists of 12 soulful new catchy compositions, each on a different subject, having music arrangement by Maestro Josinho. The title song is sung by Goa's young singing sensation Veeam. The other artists are Prince Jacob, Humberto, Lawry, H Britton, Roshan, Raisa and Alfonso Bond Braganza. Seven-year-old Junior Bond makes his debut in this album by singing a duet with Roshan. Lyrics are written by Afonso, while the special attraction of this album is a rare appearance by Joaquim D'Souza on the flute and Winston Colaco on the violin.
