PARRIKAR GOVERNMENT ON THE BRINK OF DEFEAT: As Congress MLAs and their new found friends huddled in their rooms in a five-star resort, to rest and recuperate for Sunday's day of reckoning, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar reeled under the shock and awe treatment given by Babush Monserrate and the Congress conglomerate that engaged in precision bombing and reduced the BJP government to a minority. The 31-month-old BJP-led coalition government is on the brink of collapse after four BJP MLAs - former Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio Monserrate, Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar, Poinguinim MLA Isidore Fernandes and Benaulim MLA Francisco X Pacheco - resigned from the membership of the Goa Assembly while MGP MLA, Ramkrishna Dhavlikar and independent MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues and the one UGDP withdrew support to the government and decided to support a Congress-led government. (WE-GT) COERCION, FORGERY COMPLAINT AGAINST CM, SPEAKER: Two separate complaints were, on January 29, submitted for inquiry to the Governor of Goa alleging that the Chief Minister and Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly had indulged in alleged coercion and inducement. The first complaint was from Pandurang Madkaikar that he was forced to withdraw his resignation when he went to submit it. The second complaint was submitted by Acting President of the UGDP, Radharao Gracias, who alleged that the government had indulged in a computer generated forgery by producing a fax in the name of Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha that he was extending his support to the State government. (H) I STILL HAVE MAJORITY: CM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on January 29 claimed that he was still enjoying majority and was ready to prove his majority in the Goa Assembly.He refused to disclose the total number of MLAs supporting him but reiterated that he was prepared to prove his majority on the floor of the House. (WE-GT) CONG IS IN COMFORTABLE POSITION: MARGARET: All India Congress Committee general secretary incharge of Goa, Margaret Alva, on Saturday said that the Congress is in a comfortable position to form the next government in Goa, which needs a stable and secular government. (WE-GT) MATANHY HOLDS THE KEY: Once again, it will be the Tourism Minister Matanhy Saldanha who will hold the key to the outcome of the political developments. Saldanha who was in Spain attending a tourism mart, is cutting short his trip in view of the political developments taking place and arriving on Sunday. (H) RANE, LUIZINHO, RAVI IN RACE: With the stage one of 'Operation Topple' nearing completion, the focus now shifts to the likely formation of a new government after the BJP-led coalition has lost its majority on the floor of the Goa Assembly.Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro, Congress Legislature Party leader Pratapsing Rane and former Chief Minister Ravi Naik are the three names doing the rounds. There is also a dark horse in the form of Pernem MLA and CLP spokesman, Jitendra Deshprabhu. (WE-GT) MLAS JUSTIFY THEIR RESIGNATIONS: Having submitted their resignations from the ruling BJP dispensation, the four MLAs justified their actions giving reasons ranging from revenge to the much-cliched development of their constituencies. (H) PANJIM CARNIVAL TO OPEN WITH SHIGMO DHOL: Gearing up for the Carnival on a different beat this year, the Panjim Festivals and Carnival Committee will open the "Fusion Carnival 2005" with the "Shigmo Dhol" fused in with other music. The Carnival in Panjim on February 5 will start off with the Alvorada at 5.00 am.Last year there were 79 floats and this year a similar response is expected.While the parade in the past began from under the bridge, this year the parade will begin from the Dayanand Bandodkar Memorial, near the old Secretariat at 3.30 pm and wind up at the Kala Academy. The Mini-Carnival opposite the Dempo House will extend from February 6 to February 8 and will comprise of free open-air programmes.
