In preparation for Valentine's Day, I'm looking for Konkani/Swahili words of
affection.
Konkani
tu magel moga cho[ for man] che[woman] " You are my loved one " South Goa Konkani dialect
Hanv tuzo mog kortam " I love you" or ILU in commonly used Konkani.
Hau tuzo mog karta Is this Mangalorean Konkani?
Swahili
nakupenda I love you. as in the song "Malaika"
ninapenda wewe
but am not sure if those are: (a) correct (b) appropriate or commonly used.
Does it matter if it is from a man to a woman, a woman to a man? Are there
phrases that are more appropriate?
Any guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Gender is very important in Indian languages. However, 'Love" is masculine.
To get in the right frame of mind and get the right pronounciations, listen to the songs " Malaika" in Swahili or any of Lorna's songs [ Calangute-che Praier, Lisboa, etc] before Valentine's Day. Let your Rudolph Valentino teach you the rest.
In the final analysis, however, I beleieve that the motto of my Jesuit-run school is the best for love..."Deeds, Not Words". that was the advice of St.Ignatius Loyola to St.Francis Xavier, too.
Viva. Saude.
