Last week there was a report in Times of India (Mumbai) about a 67 page book by an emeritus professor of Princeton University titled "On Bullshit". The author, Professor Harry G. Frankfurt (76) found that "Even the most basic and preliminary questions about bullshit remain not only unanswered but unasked."
He compares a "bull artist" to a liar. The latter necessarily knows the truth but chooses to lie. In this sense, he is at least "respectful" of the truth according to Frankfurt. A bull artist on the other hand cares nothing about truth or falsehood. The only thing that matters to him (sic) is getting away with what he says. He asks why we respond to bullshit in a different way than to lies. The latter is almost regarded as a criminal act whereas the former is usually condoned. Comment: Maybe we need to compare bullshit not only with lies but with gossip, jokes and the like too. ************************************************************** Greet your loved ones in Goa with flowers! http://www.goa-world.com/goa/expressions/ EXPRESSIONS - The Flower Shop.
