Margao, Feb 27: The deputy director of education, Mr L M T Fernandes while
highlighting the role of teachers in society said that process of teaching
should be joyful, satisfying and creative and it should not be based on
authoritarian instructions.

Mr Fernandes was addressing a gathering of teachers at Canacona. The aim of
the ‘school complexes’ constituted in South Goa and other places is to help
teachers in proper planning and preparing them for teaching work and to
ensure implementation of minimum programme at school level.

Keeping this in mind some school complexes from South Goa organised
workshops, symposia for teachers on educational management and
administration at Fatorda, Margao, Canacona, Quepem and other places.

In education, Mr Fernandes said that learning was important than teaching
and added,“children like activity and through activities, learning becomes
easier.”

Mr Fernandes advised the teachers to take into consideration the needs,
abilities and aspirations of children while transacting curriculum. He also
pointed out to teachers that merely mentioning a particular fact was not
teaching. “The objective in teaching is to bring out more and more from
students,” he said.

Urging teachers to make all lessons interesting and attractive so the
children can easily understand the subject, Mr Fernandes said that education
takes place at different life ‘spaces’ like home, school, community and
media, each playing by itself a very important role in total development of
an individual or student.

“The role of teachers as a facilitator to bring about the development of
character, mind and body of the student is unique,” he emphasised.

While laying emphasis on child-centered education, Mr Fernandes said that
education has to be enjoyable, child-centered and practical. After the
symposium, there was a question-answer session in which several teachers
participated and sought the clarification from Mr Fernandes.

The symposium was attended by principals, teachers, headmasters, clerks,
officers from the education department and others.
