March 1, at 8.15 am St Joseph Church, Karai Shiroda TRIBUTE from Tim de Mello to Maximo Alfonso (Canada): It was with a great deal of sadness that I read in today's Toronto Star of Max's passing. Max was my classmate in the Dr. Ribeiro Goan School in Nairobi. He was a field hockey player of note. But what I will always remember him for was for his musical talent. He was a harmonica player par excellence. As young adults, when we went on our annual class picnic -- somewhere in the wilds of Kenya -- Max would always entertain us on our way there and back in the bus. I remember belting out (with all the others, of course) well known picnic songs like "She'll be coming down the mountain" on the top of my lungs to Max's accompaniment on the harmonica. Writes reviewer JP Pereira: "Manfa Music's concept of preserving good Konkani tiatr for posterity is appreciated. Both the dramas are worth watching and for a little more than the price of three tickets, one can watch the plays in the comfort of one's home. Go for it." REMEMBERING KESARBAI KERKAR, TRIBUTE FROM A NON-RESIDENT: Rajan P. Parrikar writes on the soc.culture.indian.goa network: See the link below for a picture gallery of Kesarbai Kerkar. http://www.parrikar.org/images/kesarbai_album And some background: Kesarbai Kerkar was born in the tiny village of Keri (also spelled "Querim") in the Ponda taluka, about 15 miles due east of Panaji, the capital of Goa. The hamlet, nestled in an area of exquisite, serene beauty, is home to two temples devoted to Vetal and Goddess Sateri. There are two houses in Keri associated with Kesarbai. One is the ancestral house where she was born, whose occupants today are the descendents of her brother, the sarangiya Anant Kerkar. Following a feud with Anant, Kesarbai built another home less than a kilometre away. This second home is now the site of the Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar High School. Both the homes essentially stand in their original state; extension work on the school continues without disturbing the parent structure. I went to Keri on January 5, 2005 and took some pictures. The entire school staff was warm, welcoming and helpful. Rane-led government will lose the confidence vote in the House on Monday. -- BJP leader Rajendra Arlekar. Rane government is set to win the confidence vote on the floor of the House on Monday -- Dy CM Dr Wilfred de Souza. (From the Gomantak Times) WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT? Gomantak Times on 'Weeping Parrikar': Gone was the bravado all so obvious in November and December last year. Manohar Parrikar was a broken man when his second-in-command quit the party last week. A visibly upset Parrikar actually shed tears publicly while telling people that Digambar Kamat had "back-stabbed" him. To add insult to injury, a section of the vernacular media published a picture of Parrikar crying.(GT) --------------------------------------------------------------------- AN APPEAL FROM GOANET: --------------------------------------------------------------------- GOANET, LOOKING TO REBUILD ITS ARCHIVES: In its 10th anniversary year, Goanet is trying to rebuild its archives of all previous posts.
