George, Hope you are doing well.
These are two topics. One is about the artist -Moebius and the other is a piece called Congeries of Lust - attached here to make things clear. I was not talking about a website, but about a comic by Jean Girard/Moebius; that I planned on looking at after hearing about this Bihar Bhavan Baccanal (but only for want of a better word). Moebius is a phenomenal comic book artist who is known for his works on science fantasy. His colors are very pychedelic (read trippy). Its a bit much for many people on account of his sensual and graphic content, but then I am not straightjacketed in any sense of the term. Way back he worked on two Catholic magazines - Ames vaillantes and Coeurs vaillants. This information is on the web if one googles -- Moebius. Now about Congeries. In 2000, I had titled one of my works, Congeries of Lust. This was when I made a body of work, Speculatio: Reflections on a Scourge. Congeries of Lust, is a six foot tall drawing in ink on Hiromi paper. The heads represent politicians. The works in Speculatio reflected my concern on the attacks against Christians in India in th elate 1990s. When I had mentioned these works on Goanet way back, I got a few emails and one in particlular from this woman in the Gulf who questioned my reaction to attacks against Christians. After, I wrote back stating that my works have ranged from a small animated film Shunyata (Buddhism: and seen at film festivals), to prints on Sita and if I am not mistaken also on Kali as well as works for Himal magaine, etc., etc., --- equilibrium was maintained. I am merely pointing this out since my work deals with not just a pretty pieces for which I have abundant technical resources and expertise but as works that attempts to make one think. So when I read about Avelino's posting, I immediately remembered Congeries -- a very appropriate word for that heaps of #* whose entitlement knows no bounds. And the part about the young girls got me. My work was talking about the lust for power and the ability to kill and in doing so slowly killing or diluting oneself! On the website -- I would be happy to be part of it. But, isn't there already a website on Goan artists. Years ago while studying in India, I felt the lack of resources and information. I no longer think so. I have encountered names of Goans artists and printmakers at Biennials and Triennales as well as residencies. The ones who are doing OK have very good connections as well as access to specific information. In fact, I do believe that working as an artist now in India is a good thing. Globalization has its benefits! The visual ambassadors normally do well as long as they invest in the rhetoric. Foreign curators are interested in Indian artist for a myriad of reasons. The same curators do not feel the same about Indians living outside India. I guess they feel that one has lost ones edge. Oh, cultural theories!!? Beyond that, I observed on my trip to India, that the politics in the Indian art world is quite sickening. Lots of smiles. So for now I continue with my day job. : ) Coming back to the website -- I would say do go ahead with the site idea if you have the resources to do so. I do like Laxman Pai's work. Sometime back, I had an idea to put up site on Goan artists whose works were political in content. Not just crucifixtions. This is the topic of choice to show ones egalitarianism. I have yet to see an India artist work on religious iconography better than Souza. After mulling over it, I decided against it. Perhaps this is also something that someone else who has the time and energy could do someday! I have been drawinga lot for the last three years and am putting a site together. Oh, and studying Japanese at the Japan Society in NY. Just reached Level 6. Bye now, Venantius _______________________________ >Venantius > >Tell us more. Is it on a website?
