(GT) --------------------------------------------------------------------- VILLAGE VOICE: FOCUS ON OLAULIM IN BARDEZ --------------------------------------------------------------------- PRETTY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM A PICTURESQUE PLACE: "O' Lovely" -- an exhibition of photographs on Olaulim Village in Bardez -- shortly gets underway in this small hamlet adjoining the larger and better-known Aldona. It has been put up by photo-enthusiast whom many of us associated with the local press would know, Afonso 'Bond' Braganza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Born and bred in the city of Mapusa, Bond along with his family has been living in this lovely village of Olaulim since October 1986. Bond says he came across the pleasures of photography when his elder brother bought a camera and he, out of curiosity started using it on the sly. His brother discovered the 'theft' only when he developed the film! That was somewhere way back in his schooldays. Today, he has his own set of cameras and they are his constant companions wherever in the world he travels. Bond's photographs have appeared in almost all the local dailies in Goa, besides showing up in the Mid-Day of Mumbai and the Arab Times of Kuwait. Some of his photographs have played a vital part in the campaign of for Konkani in the 'eighties before Goa attained statehood. Bond has done photography commercially for Goa's Tourism Department and a number of starred hotels in Goa, including the Leela's. Besides photography, he is also actively associated with various NGOs. He has been in the forefront in other art fields like music, composing, singing, tiatr etc. To those visiting the Mapusa market, where he runs his family's Luizinha Stores along with wife Sara, he's a popular figure with a smile written on his face. This is his first exhibit of photographs, where he displays the different facets of "Lovely Olaulim". The exhibition will be inaugurated by Sr. Maria Dolores Sueiras, mother general of the Congregation of the Religious of Mary Immaculate (Rome), in the presence of prominent Goa-based photographer Thomas Vaz at the St Anne's Church -- Olaulim, on Sat March 19 at 5.30 pm. --------------------------------------------------------------------- SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT... SECONDS AFTER THE ACCIDENT --------------------------------------------------------------------- Domnic Fernandes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> of Anjuna/Dhahran, KSA forwards and interesting post on how a "life in gone in less than a second". Please read carefully, considering Goa's high rate of accidental deaths: Do you know what happens when a car traveling at a speed of 88 km/h (55 mph) hits a solid object? In 1/10 of a second, the front bumper collapses. In 2/10 of a second, the hood crumples, rising and striking the windshield as the spinning rear wheels lift the car off the ground. Fenders also begin wrapping themselves around the solid object. Although the car's frame has halted, the rest of the car is still traveling at 88 km/h (55 mph.) Instinct causes the driver to stiffen his legs against the crash; his legs snap at the knee joint. In 3/10 of a second, the steering wheel starts to disintegrate and steering column strikes at the driver's chest. In 4/10 of a second, 0.6 m (1.96 ft) of the car's front end are wrecked, while the rear end still moves at 88 km/h (55 mph.) The driver's body is still traveling at 88 km/h (55 mph.) In 5/10 of a second, the impact has built up to the point that the driver's feet are ripped out of his tightly laced shoes. The brake pedal breaks off. The car frame buckles in the middle. The driver's head smashes into the windshield as the rear wheels, still spinning, fall back to the ground. In 6/10 of a second, hinges rip loose, doors fly open, and the seats break free, striking the driver from behind. The seat striking the driver does not bother him. He is already dead. The last 3/10 of a second means nothing to the driver. Drive safely to avoid collisions! --------------------------------------------------------------------- SPORTS --------------------------------------------------------------------- o NATIONAL LEAGUE: Sporting 4, Dempo 0 o AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco stopped at VIP gate at Fatorda. Most of the buildings leave their sewage into these gutters. They meet at a point, which is behind our building. One has to see the variety of birds and butterflies to believe it. I can't identify the butterflies but the birds there are really good. At any given time one can see a malabar whistling thrush, paddy birds, two types of wagtails, bulbuls, tailor birds, sun birds, iora, orioles and many types of babblers and warblers. Recently my cousin had come to Goa from Chennai for a vacation. He says there are only two or three crows, where he lives, not even a sparrow or a pigeon. (Though I am still small) what has this world come to? [Interested in wildlife issues? Sign up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wildgoa/ ] INTERESTED IN WORKING FOR GOA'S ENVIRONMENT? Says Clinton Vaz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I run a mailing list for those who are interested in working for Goa's environment by way of waste management, information, alternative sources of power etc etc join the group which is at http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/greengoa Says he: "If you would like to join but are unable to do so yourself, you can send me a mail and I'll help you get on the list." ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ENERGY, THE FUTURE IS HERE: 'Carlos Mascarenhas is looking out for an expert on wind energy systems, who could offer solutions in Goa. Clinton Vaz suggests checking out with Dr. Varde of the GoG's Department of Science & Technology at the Saligao-Pilerne Plateau, Pilerne, North Goa and Sirot Fernandes of Surya Energy Systems, Colva, South Goa. His tel no is: 273-0329. Incidentally, solar water heating, and even solar power supply (though on a smaller scale) seems to be picking up among expats returning to Goa. Those who have installed the same about 4-5 years back are reporting positive results, even if initial installation costs are considerably higher. There is a government subsidy offered to anyone going in for such systems, though few seem to be aware of it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- TODAY'S SPECIAL RECIPE Fried chicken drumsticks (Goan style) --------------------------------------------------------------------- INGREDIENTS: Six chicken drumsticks.
