IT IS SAD THAT VILLAGES ARE GRADUALLY LOSING THEIR CHARM
Architect DEAN D'CRUZ is well known for his unique architectural style. His creations such as Nilaya, Pousada Tauma and the Cathedral at Karwar have attracted worldwide attention. Not only does he have 20 years experience in the field of architecture, but he has also made a significant contribution to social causes in Goa, especially in environmental protection and conservation of Goa's heritage. INACIA RODRIGUES talks to him about his experiences and the challenges of integrating environmental protection in construction plans
AN ARCHITECT IN GOA
In Goa, architectural designs have changed. Commercial work is getting more visible. There is no doubt that new technology is appropriate, but it has to be applied with reference to the past; this enables the old architectural style to be kept alive.
Nowadays, a lot of constructions are undertaken in the form of a building block, neglecting the other aspects that could add beauty to the project. For instance, Fontainhas is densely populated, but the houses are well planned with lot of variations in it.
WORKING STYLE
There is a lot that goes into a project, whether it's resideces, housing complexes or hotels. We have a group of professionals working together to provide holistic and qualitative designs.
We try to incorporate architectural designs in a sensitive approach to spaces. Each design is an experience and by weaving natural elements into our architecture, we attempt to keep people in touch with nature.
LAST VISIT TO A PLACE WITH GREAT ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
South East Asia, places in Europe have some very good designs. They have smartly designed the houses with hi-tech materials and sensitivity, making it more human to live in.
One cannot compare the working styles and technology to international standards. A lot of exposure is required to the outside world. Lifestyles, tastes, requirements have been changing. It is not just about a house with rooms to live in. It is much more than that, so there is scope for redefining.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY TO BUDDING ARCHITECTS
The students at the architecture college are enthusiastic, have got ideas and are talented. But the campus is not appropriate for their kind of study.
Besides, a lot of established architects need to share their knowledge with these kids. More than books, it is the practical knowledge that counts. Architecture is a field where one cannot stick to a fixed style, design and technology changes drastically.
WHAT DO YOU KEEP IN MIND WHILE DESIGNING?
I travel a lot and this enables me to get more exposure to new styles, designs and different approaches to houses and buildings from architects. You get to learn in this manner, while designing, I try to look at the past by giving them a touch of the old style homes.
DEALING WITH OTHER ISSUES AFFECTING GOA
We, being architects, have to be responsible to nature. There is a need to build houses. But we can limit these structures.
We have to be sensitive to nature, show concern for heritage. Goa is known as a tourist destination, but more than that it is also known for its history, and we need to acknowledge the phase that Goa has gone through.
It is sad that villages too are gradually losing their charm. Many of them are developing at a fast pace, with no proper planning, just rushing towards unhealthy urbanisation. We need to bring about an awareness on these issues and ways to tackle this, before it turns into a serious problem.
THE NEW GENERATION OF ARCHITECTS
They need to be sensitive to the environment and heritage, fight for good development, and should not succumb to pressures.
We should recognise that we are in a service industry and therefore seek to create a structure, which is customer-driven and responsive. Besides, they also need to involve themselves in the education of the young architects. So, in a way, you are contributing to society.
