EC to go ahead with bypolls in Goa [India News] New Delhi, Apr 3 : The Election Commission is likely to go ahead with the bypolls to five assembly constituencies in Goa and hold bye-elections to ten other assembly seats in some states, including Tamil Nadu. A decision on the bypolls and their schedule is likely to be taken by the Commission this week, EC sources said. They said that the poll panel has finally come around the view of proceeding with holding bypolls to five assembly seats in Goa which has been brought under President's rule early last month. The 40-member assembly in Goa with the five vacancies has been kept under suspended animation after the political drama involving Congress and BJP. The vacancies have been caused due to the resignation of incumbent MLAs in the month-long political drama, which witnessed games played by rival sides to gain control of the tiny state. Under the Representation of the People Act, the Commission has to hold bypolls within six months of creation of a vacancy and if it was not possible, it has to clarify why it was not possible. The Goa assembly elections have to be completed before July 29. While the Congress had demanded holding of early bypolls in Goa, BJP had demanded dissolution of the House and holding of fresh Assembly polls in the state. The sources said that the Commission's decision would also involve holding bypolls to two assembly seats in Tamil Nadu where the state government had earlier expressed the view that it was engaged in the Tsunami relief operations.
