Congress wants CBI probe into charges against Modi:-

Ahmedabad, April 14 : The Congress Thursday demanded a Central Bureau
of Investigation (CBI) probe into a Gujarat police officer's
allegation that Chief Minister Narendra Modi wanted opponents of a
2002 'yatra' "eliminated".

"Modi's role in the violence was doubted before. Now a senior police
officer also claims that he acted in a partial manner," Arjun
Modhvadia, leader of the opposition in the state assembly, told IANS.

"We repeat our demand for an inquiry in this matter by the CBI. The
role of Modi as well as his ministers and officers must be
investigated by the CBI," he said.

Additional Director General of Police R.B. Sreekumar, who headed the
State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) during the 2002 communal violence,
submitted a petition earlier this week before the Central
Administrative Tribunal (CAT) against his denial of promotion to the
rank of director general in February 2005.

The petition, whose contents became known Wednesday, alleged that Modi
and some other senior bureaucrats acted in a partial manner during the
sectarian clashes.

The petition alleged that he was directed verbally by Modi not to
collect intelligence about the activities of the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) and allied groups and instead focus on "Muslim militants".

Sreekumar added that he was asked to eliminate anybody who tried to
disturb the 'Rath Yatra' taken out in Gujarat in June 2002.

On Thursday, Sreekumar declined to make any further comment. "I cannot
comment on the matter as it is somewhat like sub-judice. It is not
proper to talk to media. All documents, however, are in public
(domain)," he told a TV channel.

Sreekumar was in the news earlier for defying attempts at tutoring and
deposing before a commission set up by the government to inquire into
the violence.

Sreekumar's contention is that he was superseded by the Modi
government as he refused to toe the official line on the investigation
into the sectarian clashes.
