VM is right on in his observations, but who is paying heed ? We squabble for our miniscule rights in family ancestral properties, but will not spend a single rupee in their upkeep. We squabble over ownership either for sentimental reasons or for pure greed, hoping that we will get some dividend from the sale of the properties. In the meantime our grand old mansions crumble because of lack of maintenance, are encroached upon, or occupied by squatters, who will only leave for a hefty price, and the courts and presumably tbe politicians are on their side.
Will we ever wake up ? Living in foreign lands we proudly proclaim ourselves to be Goans. A shallow boast, when we co not care enough for our homeland. In time, the Goa we so fondly remember and reminisce about will be over-run by strangers, who have a greater appreciation for this beautiful place than the "Ganv-bhav" who with scant conviction, sing "Proud to be a Goan". Hats off to VM for telling it like it is....... Vivian A. D'Souza
