Busy singles now look for love in the fast lane

Mumbai, March 27 (IANS) For scores of cash-rich, time-poor
singletons who want to shun the traditional way of courtship to find
that someone special, help may finally be at hand with the
introduction of the speed dating concept in India.
BombaySpeedD8, a dedicated speed dating service, has been launched
here with the aim of introducing a new paradigm in the way young,
prosperous and busy professionals make new friends, network and meet
their future partners.
Speed dating involves 20 to 30 mini one-to-one meetings between
singles, with each meeting lasting just three minutes.
Organisers like BombaySpeedD8 help participants who indicate they
would like to see each other again after the whirlwind three-minute
conversation in exchanging details and going on dates.
"Speed dating caters for a growing market of disillusione
professional singles who find they are not meeting like-minded
people through the conventional avenues," Maha Khan, promoter of
London-based AsianSpeedD8.com, told IANS.
BombaySpeedD8 is the local arm of AsianSpeedD8.com that was launched
two years ago by Khan, 25, a British citizen of Pakistani origin.
Speed dating is the latest dating phenomenon sweeping the West.
"Speed dating is the safest, informal way to meet people, and
possibly life partners, in a professionally organised environment.
It has revolutionised the way young single people have met and dated
each other in the West," said Khan.
"New generation Indians, who have traditionally relied on family
introductions, find it particularly difficult to meet their life
partners. Now, this new concept is going to rock India.
"We believe that very soon speed dating will become the most popular
and effective way of achieving this."
Khan has reasons to be optimistic about the success of the concept
in India. BombaySpeedD8 has had over 10,000 hits on its website and
over 300 registrations within the first week of its launch.
Prospective daters have to shell out Rs.1,500 for the initial
registration to avail of the service.
BombaySpeedD8 organised two speed dating sessions in the country's
financial and entertainment hub during the past week and two more
meetings have been scheduled for the coming week.
"When we decided to launch the speed dating concept in India, many
people were quick to say it was essentially a Western concept and
that it would just not work in a conservative society like India,"
said Khan.
"But the kind of response we have received so far belies all this
scepticism. We had done our own survey across India before launching
the concept.
"And if society and our target customers had any serious
reservations against this, we wouldn't have gone ahead with it," she
said.
Meenal Parekh, a 25-year-old television production assistant, was
excited about working her way through 20 men in her next speed
dating session so that she could meet and marry the right person.
"These days, very few young professionals have the time to look for
a mate the old-fashioned way or to wait for one to stumble into
their lives," said Parekh.
"I think speed dating is one of the most effective ways of making
new friends, networking and meeting a potential marriage partner.
It's the latest addition to my life in the fast lane."
Khan plans to launch the speed dating service in New Delhi and
Bangalore in the months ahead after getting a strong foothold in
this teeming city of 16 million people.
