I agree with the first part of the above assertion wholeheartedly and emphatically. Regarding the second part, although it is true that Christianity, like Hinduism and all other religions, are based on mythology and irrational thought, I disagree that it is a decaying institution. The tendency of humans to believe in something without any reason or objective evidence is too robust for any kind of decay to set in at any time. Indeed, it is sometimes beneficial for a lot of people to have faith in something, which is abstract and spooky, especially when evidence points to a state of utter hopelessness. One only needs to ensure that such faith does not become an impediment to our scientific, technological and social progress. >From my standpoint as a non-religious man, I hope the next Pope and all future Popes recognize the reality and benefits of a largely secular and pluralistic world.
