TIATRO DOTOR DAMIANV.

On last Friday the 22nd of this month, at Hawally A/C Hall, I attended a Konkani Drama Dotor Damianv staged by Konkan Talents Kuwait. It was a comedy play started at 6.15 giving 15 minutes grace period for the audience finally to occupy their seats. The original play was written in Kannada by Walter Desouza and it was translated into Konkani by the late Konkani writer George Pinto. George Pinto who suddenly died during his vacation in Mangalore more than a year ago was a real gigantic literary figure and his works on Konkani literature speak volumes of his intellectual capacity. It is a pity that such Konkani and intellectual giants are becoming less and less amongst us thereby leaving us orphans in the field of Konkani literary circle.

The play was directed by Lancy Rodrigues Bondel while the musical score was provided under the leadership of Joyson. It was organized in aid of Suratkal Secret Heart School Building and Children Mid-day Meal School in Mangalore. The programme started with a welcome speech by the director who thanked the actors, audience, sponsors and everyone who helped them to stage this play. Chief Guest Lawry Pinto also spoke and congratulated the organizers for brining up this show. Lawry Pinto is fully aware of the difficulties one has to undergo in staging such a show but he appreciated the efforts of everyone in coming forward to stage this show. Jayson Lasrado the well-known Mangalorean compeer read out the list of all who helped in staging this play.

The major role in the play was played by Johny Suratkal as a drunkard doctor Damianv and he was well supported by Rinna as his wife, Stephen, Rudy and others. Because of very high and sanskritik Konkani much of the meaning of the play was lost, even many of the Mangaloreans themselves could not follow many of the meanings of many of the words. No doubt, George Pinto has taken lot of pains to translate it into Konkani but he should have used light words and light language even for the common person to understand it easily. Mr. Geoge Pinto and me we both shared the same ideology for the cause of Konkani and also shared many platforms together during the Konkani functions and at times I brought to his notice the high profile Konkani he used in his conversation. But he was what he was and nobody easily could challenge him in this area. During her speech once in New Delhi, for one Hindi Samelan, the late Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi requested the high profile literary figures attending that function to use in their conversations and writings easy Hindi so that even the common person can grasp its meaning. Only doing this she said Hindi will be known to everyone and followed by everyone.

Among the songs which deserve more mention were those that were sung by young and attractive belle Lolita Rodrigues who rightly by following her mothers footsteps captured the attention of the audience. Her mother Rita when I first saw her about 25 years back singing in one grand Konkani Show Tom & Jerry at Hawally Cinema Hall, as a young female dazzled the audience by her beautiful looks and singing prowess. Lolita also showed many of the attributes of her mother in Dotor Damianv first in the trio she rendered along with Jasmine and Telma and later on in the beautifully rendered solo Sairik; duet Zini Zini Pavsa by Ronny & Jasmine DCunha; solo Aaz Kalcho Sounsar by melodious singer Gratian Desouza and Vishwas Remimbus solo Mona.

Though the hall was not packed to capacity yet sufficient crowd attended this show, overwhelming majority being Mangaloreans and all the artistes who participated were Mangaloreans.

Congratulations to the organizers and participants for taking so much of pain to organize this show where Johny Suratkal, Gratian Desouza and Luis Rodrigues also played a very good role in staging this show.
