All, Every now and then Fred raises the issue of silent goanetters and social capital. I believe he is genuinely interested in both and cannot think of any other cyberGoan who is more e-involved.
As far as silent goanetters, I presume most are adults and will speak for themselves if they find the need to. They are probably the same who were silent in class, don't speak up at work or other public places. That's fine. At a personal level their silence may be costing them a promotion in the workplace or a good grade at the university. As long as no one is putting a gun to their head to be silent, I don't see a problem here although it would be simply nice to hear from them. Regarding social capital (or social deficit), I suppose it happens. Like branches on a tree, it grows inspite of our intentions. Perhaps there is a way to cultivate it, but I would not loose any sleep over this. Regards, George
