IN TODAY'S EZINE: Elections for five -- not all six -- vacant seats in the
Goa assembly have been announced, and politicking takes on a new twist. The
Congress, like the BJP earlier, now has the shade of the umbrella of its
partymen ruling in Delhi. But you could expect some surprises from the BJP's
shrewd strategising too....

Nominations for five assembly bye-election seats in Goa begin on May
        9. Last date for filing nominations, May 16. Withdrawals by May 19.
Some 1.17 lakh voters will cast their votes. These vacencies had
arisen in January and February 2005, as five BJP MLAs had quit their
seats, reducing the Manohar Parrikar government to a minority.
Velim independent MLA Filipe Neri ROdrigues, has been disqualified
by the Speaker, but the Election Commission of India has not yet
announced a bye-election to fill the sixth vacency. Rodrigues has
challenged the Speaker's decision in the high court. (Herald)

o Political parties in Goa start working on poll probables.
The BJP exercise to select a strong candidate for the Taleigao seat
is on, and the party seems to have approached some builders to take
on the former town and country planning minister, Mr Monserrate.
Likewise, in Benaulim, the BJP leaders have established links with a
few ex-Congressmen and talks seemed to be on. (NT)

o Congress decides to contest all five seats. (H)
o BJP joins chorus in welcoming the bye-elections. (H)
o Illegal scrapyard at Carraswado, Mapusa, and an adjoining sawmill

o Curchorem locals protest over irregular drinking water over the
past year one to Karmal, Astemol and Devlemol. (H)
o Socorro (Bardez) residents take to the streets, submit memo over
water supply, garbage and construction licences.

GOA'S FRUIT FEST (opens May 6) is to go beyond just mangoes, and
will bring on display exotic fruits like the Central American zapota
(popularly known as the 'chickoo'), the Brazilian cashew, the
Peruvian guava (that we rightly call the 'peru'), the Indonesian
Java plum or jamun, and India's very own garcinia or kokum (binnam).
