< it was revealed that the ice-fruit contained 'Coliform' a harmful substance known for causing jaundice. The matter was reported to the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and on April 30 FDA officials raided two establishments manufacturing ice-fruits, Vishal Ice Fruit and Bombay Ice Fruit
and stopped their production process. Incidentally, both these establishments did not possess licences from the FDA.

Locals have alleged that the ice-fruit manufacturers were using water received from the PWD reservoir situated at Ameywada-Khandola, which is in a terrible condition. This tank was last cleaned in 2003 and being on the ground level it faces a threat of rain water seepage. Water pipelines to the tank are also in close proximity of toilets and garbage sites. Some of these pipelines have also developed leaks.>

Dear GoaCan,

Thank You for the good work you are doing. The dissemination of this information, hard as it is to digest, is important.

Over the past several decades, Goa has become increasingly filthy. Those among us who cried hoarse about the level of filth which was permitted, were greeted by comments like : Welcome to India, You are caught up in a pre-1961 time warp, You must come and live here - Then only you can talk, We live here and we don't see what you see etc.

Well.....welcome to reality.

So then, how did this happen? My answer is because Goans allowed it to happen.

Way back when I was a student at GMC, I wrote an article on the GoMeCo wallpaper about the filthy state of our wards, and of cats and dogs spending time (at night) in the children's ward. I remember being hauled up to the Dean ID Bajaj's office and requested - "please remove that photograph. what will happen if the newspapers find out"?

Ah well ....the sad reality is that the Press in Goa (never mind that saffron appointee Rajesh Singh) never really behaved as a news organisation.

It was always about Money and How to make more money. And the Goa Journos behaved (and still do .... minus a few) with that ethic (if one can use that word in this context).

So.....except for a few brave souls, there was (and still is) precious little Investigative Journalism. And a lot of "hammer Catholics, Jesuits and the Portuguese".

After all....it is easy.

BTW: Have you noticed HOW much is being written now that there is NO political party in power? Please remember to compare today with next month when the BJP return to power.

The second reason for this fiasco is the Alibaba syndrome. Right from the days of Bandodkar, successive PWD ministers have made Poixe over Poixe.

And you know how many Poixe have been swiped?

Are you surprised at the state of Water in Goa?

Xhutes......this must really be what Paradise is all about.

Next in line are members of the Health Profession. Chaps ! what exactly are you doing about this situation? I know ..... but besides making Poixe....what else are you doing? You visit these eateries, notice how filthy they are and do NOTHING about it?

You have NOTHING to say to your colleagues in the Public Health department? What's wrong with you guys?

(BTW: I am waiting for this so called GoMeCo guys. Socials, Parties, Get togethers and 5 Star First World Tertiary medicine is fine....what about Primary Health Care, CleanWater and Cleanliness. If that is on your agenda, I am with you. If Not..... I'll say ....cheers)

Finally, there are the Goan voters.

They believed those "brilliant" Freedom Fighters (real and fake) and now they are continuing to believe these alleged Journos and their masters i.e. the Press Owners and the Alibabas.

Ah well ....

here is some info from the US EPA about "coliforms" ( Hepatitis A info is well known on this list):

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards and has determined that the presence of fecal coliforms or E. coli is a serious health concern.

Fecal coliforms and E. coli are generally not harmful themselves, but their presence in drinking water is serious because they usually are associated with sewage or animal wastes.

The presence of these bacteria in drinking water is generally a result of a problem with water treatment or the pipes which distribute the water, and indicates that the water may be contaminated with organisms that can cause disease.

Disease symptoms may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, possibly jaundice, and headaches and fatigue. These symptoms are not just associated with disease-causing organisms in drinking water, but may be caused by a number of factors other than your drinking water.

EPA has set an enforceable drinking water standard for fecal coliforms and E. coli to reduce the risk of these adverse health effects.

Under this standard all drinking water samples must be free of these bacteria.

Drinking water which meets this standard is associated with little or no risk and should be considered safe.
