6 May: Leicester Mercury: Headline: Vaz bucks national trend to tighten grip on stronghold
Excerpts: Keith Vaz has celebrated his re-election to Leicester East - the safest Labour seat in the county. Mr Vaz bucked the trend for many of his party's other sitting MPs by increasing his majority. He saw his majority increase by 2,434 as his overall share of the vote rose from 57.55 per cent in 2001 to 58.14 per cent.
Conservative candidate Suella Fernandes saw her party's share of the vote fall by five per cent. She said: "This election has taught us a lot, and we've learnt to be more proactive in city areas. Much of the campaign has been focused on rural areas, but it's been a huge benefit to hear people's concerns and our policies will continue to be more relevant to people."

It is appropriate to speculate whether Blair will reward Keith Vaz's performance with a Ministerial appointment.
