IN TODAY'S EZINE: Trouble for Congress, thanks to inner fighting, prior to
the June 2 bye-elections? Police criticised for not taking action in Serula
comunidade scam. Update on politics, and follow-up of the financial scams
that keep hitting the citizens of Goa with amazing regularity... Much more
of updates, including some Goanet exclusive links. Check it out.

NIRMALA THROWS A BOMBSHELL AT THE CONGRESS: There's some bad news
for the Congress for the June 2 bye-elections, as former Congress
president in Goa, Nirmala Sawant, has decided to contest as an
Independent candidate from Cumbarjua, and Congress ex-minister
Somnath Zuwarkar too is contemplating to take on Babush Monserrate
        in Taleigao. (Herald)

FIVE MILLION RUPEE EMBEZZLEMENT AT SERULA COMUNIDADE? Porvorim
police have maintained a strange silence for a year-and-half about a
complaint filed with documentary evidence about the mis-appropriation
of Rs 50 lakh by two share-holders in connivance with the clerk.
Serula is one of the economically better-off bodies.

Former attorney Mario Stephen do Rosario Vaz had approached the
police, after getting permission from the North Zone administrator
of comunidades A.V.Budge to "file a first information report with
the crime branch to investigate the matter and book the culprits" of
large-scale syphoning off of monies from comunidade coffers.

Budge had specified in his order that the then office bearers,
attorney Agnel Lobo, treasurer Alex P Pereira and clerk Teresa
Barreto had operated a separate bank account in their individual
names in a bank at Mapusa, with neither his knowledge nor that of
        the gaonkars. (Gomantak Times)

SAINTS... AND GOAN NEWSPAPERS: Thanking saints via the newspapers is
big business (for the newspapers, that is) with devotees putting out
regular adverts thanking St Jude, St Joseph, the Sacred Heart of
Jesus and the Virgin Mary for favours received. A new ad to make its
appearance comes in the form of a Prayer to Saint Pio of
Pietrelcina, which reads: "Pray, hope and don't worry".

GOVERNOR JAMIR STYMIES DIG MUKTESH CHANDER'S ATTEMPT TO CONFIRM
PARRIKAR-APPOINTED SUB-INSPECTORS: The Governor of Goa struck down efforts
by the police brass to confirm 30 police sub-inspectors (PSIs) appointed by
the Parrikar regime. Deputy Inspector General of Police Muktesh Chander
allegedly pressurised several deputy superintendents of police to file
assessment reports on the PSIs on May 6, two days after Governor Jamir
signed an order instructing Chander to be relieved by incoming DIGP Ujwal
Mishra. (Gomantak Times)

GOA'S KONKAN FRUIT FEST CONCLUDES: Organised by the Botanical Society of Goa
and others, it attracted a huge crowd. There were 17 stalls, of different
fruits, fruit products and locally-made items like strawberry jam, mango
jelly, mango panna, mango jam and drinks specially made from bindna (kokum),
mango, pineapple. There was also mango chutney and other mango products on
sale. Progressive farmer Shrihari Kurade of Cuncolim bagged eight prizes,
for his mangoes, jackfruit, banana and cashew apples on display. (NT)

FINANCIAL SCAMS --------------------------------------------------

o SALIENT INVESTORS TO PETITION GOVERNOR: While the police have appealed to
all those duped by Salient Online Solutions to come forward and register
their complaints, investors are in a quandary as to whether the police will
really be able to arrest the absconding accused. Thousands of mostly young
Goans lost their money when a key-in-data-at-the-Internet scam burst after
charging each multiples of Rs 3000 for the priviledge of doing this
  "work".
o Two teams of Goa police dispatched to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to trace
the accused in the Salient scam found that fake addresses had been given
by accused Rajesh Sunder and Shyam Sunder. (NT)
o Close on the heels of the Salient Online scam, another cheating case

chairman of the Fernandes Group of Companies, which owned, among
other enterprises, the Herald newspaper. A C Fernandes had
purchased the declining O Heraldo newspaper and its prime
properties near the Municipal Garden from its owners who left for
Portugal, and continued this as "Asia's last daily newspaper in
Portuguese" till 1983, when shrinking circulations (said to be
just 500 copies a day then) convinced a shift-over to being an
English-language daily. Audit Bureau of Circulation figures cited
by ex-CM Manohar Parrikar in the Goa Assembly put the Herald
circulation recently as the largest among all Goan daily
newspapers, at a little over 30,000, though the Navhind Times has
claimed the prime position itself for long.

GOA SPORTS
---------------------------------------------------------------------

NATIONAL MOTOCROSS ROUND # 1 HELD IN GOA: Team TVS from Bangalore
dominated the event. But the most interesting race of the Sunday
morning was the Locals Class, in which only riders from Goa were
allowed to participate. The most closely-fought race saw the two
Furtado brothers, Gordon and Fidle take the lead in the first lap,
followed by Sudhir Borkar and Mohamad Kadar. The next couple of laps
saw Md Kadar steadily work his way up to take the lead from Gordon,
and Fidle drop to last after a fall. Md was riding well until his
bike developed mechanical problems, forcing him to retire and hand
        the lead back to Gordon.

The race to determine the best rider in the state ended with Gordon
taking the honours, followed by Imtiaz Kadar and a tremendous fight
back from Fidle to reach the podium from last place, despite the
        fall. (Herald)

BRITTOS, the network of 'old boys' from the Mapusa-based school, is throwing
up some interesting discussion. Avelino D'Souza of Bastora (Class of 1979)
recently managed to get a brief press mention of the list in the Arab Times.
Avelino commented: "Nice to know that Sir Ivan (Rocha of Parra, an inspiring
teacher of the yesteryears) is well. We like to hear from him if possible.
Also, we can start collecting pictures of our school teachers, whenever we
meet, and upload it on the site. BTW, the new photo of Class 7 looks recent.
Is it from the 90's? It can be from the 80's too with the help of today's
technology, I guess. [Actually the photo of the VII-C is from 1973-74! More
information about this list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/brittos

Kuwait-based Avelino says a chapter he planned for the Britto book
(forthcoming) was intended to be 1500 words, but it "seems to be
growing by it self and has crossed the 4000 words mark".
