<India should shun all that is British and give
up the railways, even though it is the biggest factor that unites the
country and the biggest employer. When and if India does that then wecan say
India has truly arrived. I have read recently that with the Rs 1 fare, all
and sundry will travel by Air; whoopee! If not we can always go back to the
Bullock and cart !>[Gabe Menezes, May 12]

Is this a case of going from the sublime to the ridiculous? Hope not! I too
feel that more importance should be giiven to air travel and the railways
and road transport should give more priroty to providing high speed access
to airports. But outright replacement which you advocate makes no sense
whatsoever except perhaps in jest.

Anyway, fyi, about 15 million people travel EVERY DAY by train out here.
That's the number which fly in a WHOLE YEAR. So you want our airlines to
replace the railways that too at Rs 1 fares? Even in the U.S. maybe only one
or two million fly each day.

Also regarding the employment factor, I read recently that there are 4.5
million military servicemen (i.e.including retirees). I wonder what the
comparable figure for railways is.

As for "uniting the country" what do you think of the work our film industry
has been doing? Cheers.
