Goa by-polls fight for democracy: Advani
Margao, May 21: Describing the June 2 by-polls in Goa as a "fight for
democracy and good governance", BJP president L K Advani said a vote
for congress will give legitimacy to an "illegitimate" government.

Kicking off the party's poll campaign at a rally here, the former
Deputy Prime Minister said, "These elections are unusual because this
is not just a fight between the Congress and the BJP, but a fight for
democracy and good governance".

Attacking Congress for "conspiring to murder democracy", he said
"by-polls usually happen when an MP or MLA dies or when the seat is
vacated, but in Goa by-polls were necessiated because a few people
thought it appropriate to resign from their seats to topple a
government".

Claiming that the only deterrent to defection was vote against the
defectors, Advani said "no matter how many laws you make, those who
want to defect will do so".

"Therefore the best deterrent to defection is to vote against that
person", he said.

"The Governor's action of withdrawing the pleasure to the state
government was in violation of the constitution. Any vote for the
Congress in this by-poll will be giving legitimacy to an illegitimate
government", he added.

The rally marked the official launch of the BJP's campaign. Former
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, state unit president Rajendra
Arlekar, North Goa MP Sripad Naik were present along with all five
candidates fielded by BJP.

RESPONSE: To take a leaf out of Halur's book - baby cry Advani - the
true test is at the Polls- whether the votes are bought off, or
otherwise.

What about the poaching of Isidore the last time round? I guess that
was good strategy and strictly above board!
