My brother was reading in the Daily Mail an article on people with back problems going into the Apollo Hosp in Goa and having an operation, he would very much like to see about having an operation but obviously he would need to have some idea of the costs involved. .

He has already paid privately to have xrays and an MRI scan wich showed the following:

A loss of disc height at the L5/S1 level and a large left L5/S1 disc protusion. There are reactive end plate changes on either side of the disc.

At L4/5 the height of the disc is good and he has a posterior annular tear, but the disc is degenerate.

CLINICAL IMPRESSION- From M Krishna, FRCS, Mch(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in our area ie(Stockton-on-tees Cleveland England.)

If you can help my brother could you please send us any relevant information, especially the price for such an operation we would be very grateful

yours sincerley L Tinnion

This gentleman's symptoms are linked to the degenerative disc at L5/S1 with a large L5/S1 disc protusion.

Management Plan - From Mr M Krishna:

I therefore think that a definitive solution needs to be surgical. I think the operation of choice here would be a posterior lumbar interbody fusion at L5/S1. The principle of surgery will be not only to decompress the nerve, but also restore the height of the disc and pack it with bone stabilising that segment
