In a major development, Goa bench of Bombay High Court today set aside the
elections of two BJP MLAs from Vasco and Siolim Rajendra Arlekar and Dayanad
Mandrekar respectively.
The order was pronounced in the chamber this afternoon while large crowds were
gathered outside the court to know the outcome of the petition filed by losing
candidates Chandrakant Chodankar and Philip Neri of Nationalist Congress Party.
After the order to set aside the election was pronounced, respondents appealed
for the stay on the implementation of the order which was granted by the Court
for 30 days. The respondants\' lawyers said that they would challenge the order
in the Supreme Court at the earliest.
NCP State chief Dr Wildred deSouza expressed satisfaction on the order and said
that the order was expected. He said that NCP wanted to teach them a lesson
since they played spoiled sport in the elections.
He further said that six more BJP! MLAs would have been disqaulified had the
Congress filed similar petitions against Manohar Parrikar, Babu Azgaonkar,
Suresh Amonkar, Francisco D\'Souza, Vinay Tendulkar, Ramrao Dessai who were
holding office of profit while constesting the last elections. He said,he had
asked the Congress to file petition against these candidates but Congress did
not give a serious thought to it.
