PANAJI: Pascoal Jose Menezes who died last Sunday at the age of 95 is considered in Goa as the pioneer of the pharmaceutical industry. A drop out at while he was only in third standard, Pascoal became the chairman of the flourishing CMM group of industries.

What started as a journey on a cycle to reach out to people for the promotion of his father's floundering pharmacy and marketing the drugs, culminated in his purchasing an Austin Morris car as part of his marketing strategy.

It was not pharmacy alone that Pascoal limited his business venture. He made the most of his fortune during pre-liberation days when Goa was a paradise for imported goods for buyers from Mumbai for foreign goods like Gillette blades, Ray Ban glasses, gramophone records and costume jewellery. Among his customers were the legendary Nargis Dutt and half the film industry.

Post liberation the import restrictions were extended to Goa as well but the indefatigable Pascoal indulged and expanded his business into manufacturing that resulted in the foundation of the industrialisation of Goa.
